Take only what you need to survive - 8/3 evening, Haven of the Valley - Tarran/Tatianna [closed]

The horse protested almost as much as the man's aching muscles as he blazed through the gates of the large castle in Valley Haven. It had only slowed to a canter when Tarran Hutchinson vaulted off, nearly falling when his tired legs impacted the ground. The guardsmen moved to help him, but he waved them off. "Bar the gates. Nobody enters. If there are patrols out, they will stay out until I say otherwise." The men looked confused, but in Prince Langston's absence, they were not prepared to contradict him.

Taking the front steps two at a time, Tarran could feel the sweat coursing down the side of his head, his temples throbbing with the pumping of the adrenaline. The natural energy boost was all that kept him moving now. Back and forth to and from Hebron in one day was more than he was comfortable with, but after what he had seen at Shellten Castle, and the plea Eva had made, he didn't have a choice. What was worse, he still had a ship to ready.

"Princess!" He was calling for her while still a level beneath her room. The captain could feel the burn in his leg muscles now. "Princess Tatianna," he called again, hoping she could hear him, at least soon enough to pull a robe on before he came through the door to her chambers.

The guards there looked as though they wished to stop him, but when they saw his condition, they only moved to open the door. Nodding his thanks, Hutchinson burst onto the scene. "My lady," he said, nearly out of breath. "Get dressed," he told her, noticing that she was in her robe. "We need to move."

Tatianna enjoyed a quiet evening in her chambers, having a bath and a light supper with a book before donning her night-clothes early. She was engrossed in the story, curled up in the bed when she first heard someone shouting for her. It took her a few minutes to realize that it was Tarran, pushing back the blankets and getting to her feet. She had just put her robe on when the door opened, showing how out-of-breath and flushed he was. Surprise was on her face, easy to see when he gave his instructions.

My lady, get dressed. We need to move.

Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. Tatianna trusted Tarran, knew he would not come here in a lather if there wasn't good reason. Biting her lip, she nodded, trying not to feel panic. "Give me a few minutes, Captain. I will be ready." Hoping an explanation would come once she was dressed, she didn't wait for a maid but went to find a dress she didn't need help to put on and some shoes. Trying to think past her whirring mind, she picked up a small bag to put a few necessities into, like her book, a hairbrush, a change of clothing.

Tatianna could move very fast when she put her mind to it, and Tarran's words had her increasingly frightened. She kept calm, but it was a false-calm, a front that was fragile. Her thoughts were for Clouse and Nataliah, praying they were safe and well. Surely they had not succumbed to the last of the plague? These were her thoughts as she wriggled into the dress and stepped into the shoes, picking up the bag to join Tarran in the hall. "What is going on, Captain?"

Tarran was doing his best to stay calm, but mentally he was running through the checklist for their departure. Last item on that list, was Evangeline. Getting back to her, and extracting her from Shellten Castle, came right after figuring out what to do with the remaining Balfourian princess. "I'll explain once we are aboard the Righteous Wind," he offered, leading her through the castle, with each contingent of guards they passed falling into escort behind them. Tarran had given them the orders as he went by on the way to her chambers, and now every one in the building who was native to Balfour was making their way toward his carrack.

The ship was being readied by the few sailors that had remained from when Lochlan had retreated to Balfour. They were Hutchinson men, a handful from the time of his father, more from his early adventures on the sea. All experienced enough to fly without him if need be. But none that he would trust with Tatianna. As they ascended the plank, Tarran looked back to the young woman. "My cabin," he said to her, and motioned a group of guards to escort her there. He turned to check the sails.

By the time the ropes had been pulled in, and they had navigated to the center of the river, Tarran was still trying to figure out what he would say to the girl. Closing the door to his cabin, he nodded. "Your highness," he began, fidgeting with the cuffs of his shirt. "I'm afraid I have some rather unfortunate news. We'll have to return to Balfour earlier than we expected."

Tatianna said little as Tarran hurried her along from the castle, surrounded by Balfourian guards. Something was very, very wrong. Even someone as naive as her knew the signs of grave trouble. The guards were so many that it suggested that she was in danger, but from who or what, she did not know. Frightened, she did her best to keep up with Tarran as they put the castle behind them and boarded his ship.

Delivered to his cabin, she couldn't sit. Her mind supplied all kinds of nightmarish horrors, worst-case scenarios about Nataliah, Langston, or worse, Lochlan. Pacing the cabin, Tatianna looked to the port-hole, seeing the ship under way and sailing. Her stomach clutched, her heart skipping a beat. Looking up as he entered the cabin, she saw the unmistakable signs of anxiety. "Return?" She blurted it out as she took a step closer. "What has happened, Captain? Tell me quickly, please..."

It was becoming all too clear that he wasn't going to be able to deflect Tatianna's questions forever, but he did manage to stall the matter until his sister's were safely aboard. Near as he could tell, there were a few guards and servants still making their way up the planks, carrying what effects that could not afford to be left behind. Watching as his sisters passed the window on the way to their own private quarters, Hutchinson let out a sigh. "I'm afraid that there has been an attack on Nataliah," he told her, his voice tired and soft.

It would have been convenient, if that was all he had to offer. After all, wasn't that horrific enough? But the fact that the truth went beyond that was even more disheartening. "It was Langston," he told her, lowering his voice further, as if hoping she wouldn't hear him. "Apparently, King Cailen struggled with him, and your brother was killed. Cailen Shellten is on his deathbed as well, unless Evangeline can do something to prevent it." That part stung him the hardest. He wouldn't, couldn't, leave without her. But there was nothing to say that she would ever be released, especially if Cailen died.

Gazing out the bridge window as the Righteous Wind pushed away from the shore, Tarran rubbed his temples in thought. "Regardless, with the plague on Balfour lifted, and your brother's unfortunate passing, I think it is time for us to return to our own island."

The time spun out, adding to Tatianna's tightly strung nerves. What she did not know was taunting her from beyond her grasp, spinning night-mares in her mind. She could imagine so many horrors, each was worse then the next. If Tarran did not start telling her what was going on and soon, she would wear a path out in his cabin with her frantic pacing. Her thoughts were for her family, especially her sister. Was Nataliah safe and well? What of Langston? Who had done this?

Before she could totally panic, Tarran sighed and started to talk. An attack on Nataliah? She started to say something, but what Tarran revealed next shocked her into silence. Tatianna stared at Tarran, shaking her head. This couldn't be real. Langston would never do anything like this! He wasn't like Luther, she refused to believe it. But Tarran had no reason to lie to her. He had no reason to tell her anything but the truth. Langston had betrayed their family, just as Luther had. King Cailen was dying, her sister was in gravest danger. Everything was chaos.

Tatianna swallowed hard, trying to make herself calm down and think. Just think. They had to get home and tell Lochlan what happened. There had to be something he could do. Lochlan was King. "I... yes, you're right. Lochlan will need to know about this as soon as possible. Just..." She made herself look at Tarran. "Tell me Nataliah is safe and well?" She could bear up as long as she knew Nat was okay.

Tarran approached the wheel in his cabin, identical to the one directly above it on the deck. Turning to the large brass cylinder, he sighed. "I'll take the helm, Cardas," he called up, and received an acknowledgement almost immediately. Turning the wheel, he ignored the question from the princess for the moment. When Cardas called back down to inform the captain that they were going the wrong way, Tarran nodded, knowing the man can't see him. "I know, mate. We're going to Hebron." There was a long moment of silence, before the man finally called back with another acknowledgement.

Once he had them set on an inland course, Tarran finally turned to look at the woman. "Nataliah has been arrested," he told her casually. He moved about the room, grabbing up effects as he went. The sword was still at his waist, but he found knives for both his boot and his belt, and pulled on a heavy leather vest. "As for King Lochlan, we'll never reach him in time. The battle is here, and now." In truth, he didn't know what had happened inside the walls of Shellten Castle. Nor did he care. The Righteous Might was equipped with two ballistas and enough ammunition to fight a naval battle on it's own. "We're gonna have to get your sister and Eva ourselves," he resolved.

Tatianna frowned, watching Tarran and trying to make sense of all he said. There were so many questions in her mind, so much that did not make sense that she stayed silent for now. It was better to keep her eyes and ears open, knowing she had little she could offer to the situation. Tianna was no trained fighter, and she certainly was no strategist. The best thing she could probably do was just stay out of the way and pray that her sister was safe.

Hearing instead that Nataliah had been arrested, she sank heavily into a chair, stunned. No, it was not possible that Nataliah had anything to do with this. Her sister did not have it in her to do such a thing. Knowing that Eva was still caught in Hebron, and that they had to get her out, she did not object when the ship was abruptly turned towards Hebron. If they could get Nataliah out, even better. Tatianna watched Tarran arm himself, mentally and literally, and dug deep to find some spine. "Yes, you're right. Tell me what I can do to help?"

Tarran was still bouncing about the cabin when the princess stopped him with her query. Turning, he looked at her with a dumbfounded expression. Nothing. She could do nothing to help. He was about to say so when he reconsidered. Tarran knew what it was like to be helpless. His bout with the plague had taught him well. Surrendering Eva to the guards in Hebron had taught him better.

Nodding, he began to think. "When we get to Hebron, I'll go ashore. Me and a handful of others. I'm going to need you to take command of the ship. We'll try to find Nataliah first. If she comes out without us, then you take the Righteous Wind and make for the sea. There will be enough crew to help you." He watched to make sure she understood him. "No matter what my men, or Queen Nataliah say in protest, you leave. We'll make it right in the end." If he lived that long.

Moving back to the lower bridge, Tarran waved her over. "Come here," he bid her, before remembering that she was royalty. "Please, your highness," he corrected himself. "I need to teach you how to steer and navigate." The sun was up, and the stars would be in the sky before they arrived. Hopefully the girl was a quick study.

Bewildered, Tatianna watched Tarran bounce around the cabin like a child's ball, not knowing what he was doing or thinking beyond knowing they had to get Eva out of Hebron and sail home. She hated to leave Nataliah behind, wondering without speaking if she could find a way to smuggle her sister out to safety. The lower lip nibbled on, she looked up as he spoke.

She blinked as the words poured free. Take command of the ship? Her? Her mind raced, but she nodded. Tarran was right. She had to remember who and what she was. Her obligation was to her sister and their safety. Lochlan would not have it any other way. Tatianna didn't know the first thing about sailing, but she'd grown as a Princess in the past few months. She knew how to give orders. "I understand, but let's hope the five of us can make good and leave together."

Obeying, she went to look over what he intended to teach her. Prepared to learn quickly, she nodded for him to go on, but asked casually, "How do you plan to get Eva and Nataliah out?"

Nodding at her hopes, Tarran grabbed the girl's hands and put them on the wheel. "The tides will always try and turn you back to land," he told her. "You must keep the wheel locked against the spin," he added, releasing her hand so that she could feel the tension as the extensions tried to turn back of their own volition. "If you must leave without us, every man and woman on board becomes a crewman. My sisters know enough about sailing to help you get home."

Her question immediately threw Tarran back to the past. To a time where it was Tatianna in Nataliah's place. She had never known his role that day as Eva had put her under such sedation that she couldn't possibly recall any of the events that led up to the death of Luther. "Let's just say," he began with a smile. "This won't be the first time I've stormed a castle to rescue Lady Baptiste. She has a knack for getting herself into trouble. Especially where Balfourian Princesses are concerned." Silently, and while he would do anything for his king and country, Tarran hoped that this would be the last time.

She gripped the wheel and tried to feel what he was telling her. Sure enough, there was a steady pull, a tug on her hands as the wheel fought against her guidance. Tatianna was hopefully not going to be put to the test in the truest sense, but if so, she was preparing to do the best she could regardless. When he mentioned leaving without them, she shook her head firmly. "I am not leaving without any of you. Just put that thought out of your head, Captain."

Even if it meant she had to drug her sister and drag her bodily on board, then she would. Whatever was needed to keep Nat safe and bring her home, Tianna was prepared to do. The smile Tarran wore did not really soothe her, but she blinked at his words. They were plural, suggesting what, that other Balfourian Princesses - in other words, Nataliah - had gotten Lady Eva into trouble? "I don't understand, but there will be time for explanations later. You must go before it is too late, and I shouldn't hold you up any more. Is there anything else I should know before you go?"
