Do You Really See Me? [ 9/4, morning, Edward/Victoria ]

Xavier's words stayed with Victoria that day and into the next. True to her word, she went to speak with her brother, the better to find out how he saw her and where he saw her going. What his intentions might be for her future, whether they meshed with her own hopes. Waiting for him at breakfast in the rooms that were given to the Fairfaxes, she also made a point of trying to be more patient with Catherine. It was going to take some practice, but a promise given meant a promise kept out of a Fairfax.

Making sure that she looked particularly pretty and well-kept, Victoria watched the door to the room where her brother slept with an eagle's eye, mentally reviewing what she wanted to say and how she wanted to say it. Catherine was fortunately enjoying her tea and reading a new book bought in the market, making it much easier for Victoria to be in her sister's company. She was a little surprised to see that the book wasn't one of Catherine's usual flimsy romances, but something more substantial. Maybe she was a better influence then she realized.

Patience was difficult for her now that she'd made up her mind to talk to Edward, especially since he didn't seem to be stirring. Waking him up before he was ready wasn't smart, though. She would just have to pour another cup of tea and try to read her own book until he emerged from his room, and then she could talk to him. Hopefully, that would be soon.

Edward had spent the previous night in the company of a rather lovely lady, but it was not quite up to par to the mysterious royal lady he had met during the little shindig the upstart family had thrown. However Edward may have felt about the family, the gathering had managed to attract a somewhat modest family, especially since it warranted the attention of the royal family. Why the King would bother would this little family, Edward honestly had no idea, but he decided not to meddle with the matter. If the King wished to toy with small game, that would be his choice and ultimate undoing.

The sun woke him up with a faint grunt. His recent conquest was still slumbering in the bed beside him. For the life of him, he couldn't remember her name, but she did have a rather pretty face and body. That was all that had mattered in the moment. Deciding not to kick her out just yet, he eased himself out of bed, washed up and got dressed for the day. Granted, a part of him wanted to not bother with his appearance, especially not for breakfast, but he never knew just whom he would encounter.

Thus, when he encountered his sister waiting for him just outside the room, he was silently relieved he stuck to his philosophy. "Victoria," he greeted with an arched eyebrow, "Good morning?"

Her head lifted as he finally made his appearance, a nod greeting her brother as her sister continued to sip her tea and read her book. Victoria studied him, mildly grateful that he took the time to at least put some clothing on, though she doubted his play-mate for the night was similarly fortunate. "Good morning, brother. I hope that you slept well?" She doubted he did much in the way of sleeping last night, but getting onto him about it wasn't going to sweeten his disposition towards her.

Victoria stood, reaching for the pot of tea with a sweet smile. "May I pour you a cup of tea? The servants will bring you a fresh plate, I'm sure, now that you are awake." She hadn't missed the way he looked after Lady Marianne the night of the ball, or some fat, lazy lord's wife, but Xavier's words stayed with her. She could do this, though, persuade her brother that she could be trusted to look after herself and her own interests.

"I did once I settled in for the night," he replied with a light nod, silently grateful for the question. Nonetheless, he was idly curious as to why she had decided to visit with him in the morning. Immediately, however, he mentally chided himself for being so cynical with his thinking. It was entirely possible that Victoria simply wanted to have a conversation with her brother. "Did you enjoy yourself last night? I imagine you found your knightly cousin." The tone was neutral as he made the remark.

A nod was her answer to the offer of tea, "Thank you, yes." Edward's attention turned toward the window for a long moment. The sun was rising steadily against a partially cloudy day. There was a healthy breeze in the air. That was good, he preferred the windy days above all. It would be good time for a walk.

Pouring deftly, Victoria added the honey she knew he preferred to sweeten his tea and stirred before setting it precisely at his right hand. "I'm glad to hear it." She caught the glint of his eye in suspicion, but carried on like she hadn't noticed. "Welch Run has been a very nice change for us. Have you been able to speak with Lord De Angelis yet? I believe you mentioned you wanted to discuss some business?" She glanced at her sister, seeing a strange look on Catherine's face. Victoria didn't understand it, glad when Catherine didn't say a word.

She blinked innocently at the question, her smile warming with the thought of Xavier. "I did. He was kind enough to escort me on a walk around the grounds. I know you would prefer I didn't go out without some sort of escort, after all." She didn't go into the subjects they talked about, knowing Xavier irritated Edward for reasons she didn't exactly know. "It promises to be a fine day. Catherine and I thought we might go down to the lake. What are your plans?"

"Good morning, Catherine," he told her politely, realizing that his sister was being very quiet as was her wont. Seeing her reminded him that he had best get on with the Morgans, since he was fairly confident Robert would like to know where his son's betrothed was. Truth be told, Edward had had little interaction with the heir to House Morgan, knowing that he was dark and mysterious. Hm. He drew his attention back to Victoria, "Hm? Business? Oh, yes. I will talk to him soon enough, I imagine. I'm hoping to see what the man is actually capable of."

Edward exhaled, thinking on his sister's question. "I did not really have any, to be honest. I thought of taking a tour of the markets and interacting with some of the other lords. We have crops sitting in our storehouses that we don't need and I want to make sure they keep moving out of our lands. Spoiled crops do no one any good, after all."

Catherine was quiet and absorbed in her book, but Victoria nudged her to at least acknowledge their brother's presence. A hand rose half-heartedly, in Victoria's opinion, to greet Edward as she indicated the servants should bring a full plate to Edward's place. No doubt their brother had a definite need to replenish his stores of energy after his energetic activities of the night! She waited for his answer a little impatiently, knowing he was distracted. Probably thinking of the woman he'd left.

"I'd say he's capable of a lot, seeing as he's now lord of Welch Run. He has some items that may interest you, I believe? And of course, you'll probably want to speak with the King while he's here." It was a not-so-subtle reminder that he had promised her he would see about some sort of post at Court for her, either with Queen Nataliah or one of the Princesses. If he wouldn't, she had Xavier's help to fall back on. "Maybe you should also talk with Lord Durand? He seems an enterprising sort."

Edward's gaze turned to Catherine again, knowing that Victoria was dancing around a point but not landing directly on it. Life with Victoria, he realized, was a bit of a dance. "Catherine, when you get back from your day with your sister, I'd like to have a word with you. We have some matters to discuss, if you don't mind." What those matters were, he would not reveal at the present time. He needed time to think.

That finished, his gaze returned to Victoria's levelly. "I frankly find myself to be suspicious of a man that resorts to violence to achieve his means. It makes them difficult to trust and understandably so." If Edward were Caillen, he would assert his stance over the newest lord of the realm swiftly and assuredly, no matter how distasteful Edward found the need to do so. "Mm, I will speak with him and possibly Austin Durand. What do you think of Queen Nataliah, by the way?" It was his way of courting the subject of her being assigned to the woman.

Jostled to awareness by her sister's sharp elbow, Catherine lifted pale blue eyes to blink owlishly at her brother. "Oh. Good morning, Edward. I hope you slept well." She sent a fulsome look to Victoria, aware that her sister had an agenda to exploit during the morning meal and equally determined to have no part in it. Where Victoria was often frustrated by Edward, Catherine rather enjoyed being overlooked by the Lord of Suffolk.

She started to refill her tea when he addressed her specifically, bobbling the pot so that the amber liquid filled the saucer. Edward wished a word with her? On some matters? Cat briefly stared at her brother with a flare of dismay in her eyes, unable to conceive what matters he had that concerned her. Recovering her wits before Victoria lectured, she hastened to tidy up the spilt tea and bury herself back in her book before she drew either sibling's attention again.

Victoria looked over at her sister, curious to know what on earth Edward could possibly want to discuss with her. Catherine was just so... bland, so unassuming and dull. Maybe Edward would finally push their sister into putting in some effort on her appearance, her conversation and her charm, since she obviously wasn't interested in honing her intelligence. Or maybe they'd all get lucky and he had finally found some poor sap to take her on.

No matter. She pushed it from her mind, much more interested in her discussion with Edward. "And then steps away from claiming his prize? I doubt their reasoning for Lord Danush not standing as Lord matches Thomas's, but I would like to know why he was so eager to give it away if he's that ambitious. And that younger girl. Secily. She's an embarrassment." To her own credit, she did not look at Catherine. Her sister was boring, but at least Cat knew how to behave like a lady. "They're upstarts, Edward. And they can't be trusted. I will be glad to put this place behind us."

Victoria sniffed disdainfully. The DeAngelises were hardly noble, and their behavior proved it. Glad that Edward wouldn't consider a marriage for any of them with the family, she lifted a brow. Durand? Unable to help it, she smirked. "Aislynn has plenty to say about him, little of it good. It seems he's got his eye on Aislynn's sister, and the girl can't bear the sight of him. Maybe you can use that."

His question on the queen made her stop and consider, then shrugged. "She's foreign, but at least she dresses well, seems kind, and polite enough. Why do you ask?"

Now that Victoria's true thoughts on the matter, rather than merely the polite ones, were coming to bear, Edward found himself relaxing more. Dear Victoria certainly had her high standards, but then so did he. They were birds of a feather, even if they didn't always see eye to eye on matters. "That is exactly what I was thinking. It concerns me that the King is not really ... doing anything about it. In fact, he seems to be welcoming the family with open arms." Edward immediately shook his head, "A fine way to get a knife in your back, if you ask me."

Edward's eyes narrowed in thought, "Elizabeth, you mean? Interesting. I wonder what brought that on. I might ask Aislynn about it," if he could ever track down the woman. Aislynn seemed to be going hither and tither as of late, no doubt attempting to enjoy herself in her own personal manner. Not that Edward had any room whatsoever to judge, that is.

"If I recall, you had expressed an interest to join the Court, no?"

Edward was her brother and deserved only the honesty. Catherine was mostly ignored or over-looked, more for knowing her sister probably wasn't paying attention or didn't care about the conversation anyways. Thomas wasn't here and neither was Xavier to scold her for watching what she said. If she couldn't be herself with Edward, then it couldn't be done. "The King acts only when it's in his interests, Edward, and right now, he can barely stand upright. Do you really think he's strong enough to stand up to these fly-by-nights?" Harsh, but Victoria prided herself on keeping track of what was going on and listening when no-one thought her ears were open. "Makes me wonder if he didn't want this to happen."

"Yes, Elizabeth. Georgianna and Jane aren't here that I saw, so that just leaves Elizabeth. She's attractive enough, you might think about her for a wife." Victoria shrugged again, though she wondered if Elizabeth was at all like Aislynn. She hadn't spent much time with the other young woman. "Ask Aislynn and you'll get chapter and verse. Make sure you have a few hours free before you do." She smiled to prove she was teasing, though. Victoria looked on her aunt-in-law with affection.

The question made her stop and look at her brother, wondering what he was up to. "Yes, but why do you ask?"

"The king is a damned fool and young," Edward finally stated, waving his hand in an almost dismissive manner. "I don't honestly see why he thinks he will have an effective rule just because he happened to be born to the right parents. "So, no. I don't think he's strong enough. Thus, I am going to seek securing this family's future. I want our funds safe and our family fed. That means I have very limited options as to whom I should wed and ... for you, my dear, sister. We need to be conservative." He caught her eye on that point, "Believe me, I rail against being conservative myself, but we have to play it safe with this weak king."

"Hm," he teetered his head at Elizabeth being a wife, "I'll.. think about it," and that is all that he promised. He pressed on to another point, "I want your eyes close on the Royals, Victoria. I would like you serve the Queen as a lady in waiting. It will give you a keen insight into just what in the hell is going in on there. Wouldn't you agree?"

Victoria was surprised to hear Edward speak so of the King. Then again, all of the Fairfaxes were opinionated and Edward was definitely one of them. Listening to him made her smile fade a little when he brought her up and her future. She stole a look at her sister, who once more seemed to be paying little attention to them, then frowned at their brother. She got the hint well enough. He wanted her to be almost as dull as their lump of a sister. Sweet and demure and dull. Victoria rolled her eyes, but didn't argue. She would just ignore that little dictate. If Edward wanted to be stuffy and conservative, that was his choice and his problem.

The neutral comment passed by without more remarks from her. If he wasn't interested in Elizabeth Sheridan, there were plenty of other women in Tuneric that would tempt him to the altar. She had no doubt he'd continue pursuing his other pleasures even after marriage, but he had the family line to secure, as he said, and he needed an heir. Better him then her. At least Edward wasn't already thinking of marrying her off. She was safe as long as Catherine was unmarried, which probably meant Victoria could enjoy life for a good long while.

Her attention sharpened when he spoke of serving the Queen, a nod giving her agreement. The prospect of being his eyes and ears only made it more attractive to her, but she definitely agreed with the idea of being close to the Royals. "I would, definitely. It would be good to keep our fingers very closely on the pulse of Tuneric."

Edward spotted the roll of her eyes, and glanced idly to Catherine, "Cat, please excuse us." He waited until she departed before continuing. "That is the reason I want you be close to the Court, since I cannot be. We have no other truly reliable eyes there, anyway." Granted, Xavier could have been a possibility, but who knew what that man would actually do. Damned knights. Yet, that was not what Edward wanted to talk to her about. There was something far more serious that needed to be addressed.

"You remind me of a younger age, Victoria. I don't know if you remember much of the time when I was coming of age, bursting into the world. It was full of sights, sounds, smells, experiences and much more. I wanted to experience it all and I wanted to experience all of it at once." The smile was a distant one as he took a sip of tea. "So, tell me, sister. What would make you happy?"

Glad to see her sister go, Victoria huffed out a breath, knowing a scold was coming on. Edward probably didn't appreciate her attitude, but that was just too bad. He knew better then to ask her opinion if he didn't want to hear it. He surprised her by telling her his reasons for wanting her close to the Court, making her eyes narrow at him. Edward was up to something. "True, and of course you know I will do my best. I always do." Even if he didn't always agree that it was her best.

And then the lecture came. She pressed her lips together, waiting for the reminder that she was going too far, too bold, too much what-ever. The last thing she wanted, Victoria decided, was to be compared to her older brothers. And definitely not to her older lump of a sister, boring as Cat was. The question Edward asked was dangerous. Did he really want her to answer that with truth? "Aside from the freedom to come and go as I please? Some time at Court would be ideal. Why, do you have some sort of other plan for me?"

Edward seemed satisfied enough by her willingness to go to Court and keep an eye on the various happenings. The king was an unstable monarch and Edward was genuinely concerned for the kingdom. Well, more accurately, he was concerned poor leadership could affect the quality of life the Fairfaxes enjoyed in Suffolk. Yet, that could be extended to the rest of the kingdom, too! However, he still studying the young woman, as though he were trying to put together a puzzle. And, in a way, he was. It was just that the puzzle involved words.

"Come and go as you please? Certainly, freedom is a delicious thing. I have no desire for you to view Suffolk as a gilded cage, but Victoria, you have to understand I am seeking to protect you. You are a young beautiful woman that shows a love and curiosity of life. I do not hold that against you, but there are things and people out there that would not hesitate to use it against you." Edward realized in that moment he was sounding more like his father than he cared to admit. The notion, though disgusting to him, was quietly accepted. Edward had a duty to protect the Fairfax family and he was going to do it.

There was more he had to tell her, but one thing at a time.

Relieved that he wasn't going to fight her about going to Court, Victoria sighed as her brother showed his over-protective side again. She just wished he would relax. Nothing was going to happen to her in Welch Run, nothing was going to happen to her in Aston, and nothing was going to happen to her in Hebron either. He was worrying over nothing like usual. "Xavier will be at Court too, Edward, and I'm sure he will make sure I don't do anything foolish. Like have a good time." Rolling her eyes was too predictable, but she let it wash over her. In a way, she understood that he was doing out of concern, but it was getting very tiresome. "I don't need to be protected half so much, Edward. And don't you have your own business to worry about as well?"

He did sound like their father, which only made her more annoyed. He had a look on his face that said this little lecture wasn't done though. She lifted a brow at him, just waiting for him to drop the next item on the table.

Edward's jaw visibly tightened at the mention of Xavier, but he forced himself to remain calm. "This family is my business, Victoria," he found himself correcting her. "The family name and Suffolk are my business. It is my business that it not only remains standing, but it stands strong in the Kingdom." With the Kingdom weakened by plague, new houses come into the battlefield that was the Courts, and the economy on shaky ground, Edward could not afford scandal and the whims of youth to threaten it. "I am not suggesting that you don't enjoy your life, Victoria, but you will have your duties to this family."

He drew in a breath, "And that means that you will have to marry and it may be sooner rather than later." The family tree was growing increasingly empty, much to Edward's discomfort. Spouses would be need to be secured for all of his siblings. Naturally, Xavier had gone ahead to secure his own spouse, much to Edward's chagrin. However, that would be dealt with later. "That is why I want you to be careful. You have a fiery spirit and you have seen the trouble my own spirit has gotten me into, yes?"

She was making him angry and that was bad. Victoria recognized when she crossed a serious line and quickly brought herself up short. Much as she hated to admit it, Cat was probably right that she didn't know or really understand Edward. Accepting his scold with a bowed head, she adopted a more meek attitude. "You're right. I apologize, Edward. I... spoke harshly and out of place. Please forgive me."

Occasionally, she tended to under-estimate her brother's strength. Xavier was more easy-going, which meant that he was more likely to over-look some of her pranks and mischief, but not Edward. Realizing that she needed to find a better way to be honest and to enjoy herself so as to keep Edward calm wasn't easy, but then... Victoria was young and still learning. She could seek out that balance, hopefully. "Yes, of course. And I will do those duties."

When he spoke of marriage already, her head snapped up and she started to protest. Not already, not when she was just starting to enjoy adult life. Swallowing it down, this wasn't the time to argue about it just yet, not when Edward was trying to make a point. Much as she hated to admit it, he was probably right. "Yes. And I will try to be more careful. I don't want that kind of trouble."
