    The King's Man - 9/10 afternoon, Riverwatch Keep - Dastan/Seamus [open]

The emotions that came with his arrival to Riverwatch were a mixed bag. Seamus was happy to be doing service to his liege, and welcomed the respite from his constant travels with his brother, Leigh, but something about his promotion didn't sit well with him. Whether it was the fact that he was young and fit, when most Knights of the Shield were of retirement age, or whether it was that the entirety of the assignment felt like spying, he couldn't say.

The truth was that part of his duty was to act as an intermediary on both accounts. If Dastan De Angelis needed something from the crown, then Seamus was to communicate that need. Likewise, if Cailen had orders for Dastan, they were Seamus' to convey. All of this seemed problematic, seeing as how it was most often the messenger who got shot. Couple all of that with the fact that Guy Durand seemed to think that on top of his regular duties, it was Hepburn's responsibility to report on events as they occurred in Welch Run, and to make a judgement call on whether or not they seemed appropriate. Seamus supposed that in and of itself was why he was nominated over Leigh.

Reaching the gates of Riverwatch, Seamus greeted the men positioned at the gates. "Good afternoon gentlemen. By order of his grace, King Cailen, I am to be admitted straightaway to see Lord Dastan. If you would inform your master that I have come, I shall await his pleasure in the foyer."

The general consensus on Seamus was that he was simple. And while he resented the negative connotation that came with such a description, it was true that he was not a complex man. He preferred things to be straightforward and simple, more for the sake of decency than for his lack of understanding. Hopefully, Dastan De Angelis would be of a similar mindset, and everyone could go about their business for however long Hepburn would be in residence here.

It was a little while before the servants met up with Dastan to communicate that a messenger from the King had come to call for him. He was still working with Danny in wrapping up affairs on what to do with the Peregrine girls as well as figure out who would be in charge of some of the other duties while his brother was in the keep of the King. Dastan didn’t really like the idea of his brother being some kind of leverage tool for the Crown to hold onto like an ace up the sleeve, but the last thing he wanted to do was defy a liege who was wary of his family’s takeover of a former lordship. Things had to be this way until better circumstances came to pass.

But the Hepburn messenger was lead to the foyer where the De Angelis lord could eventually come to speak with the young man. Obviously Secily was also intrigued and inquired to their new visitor, but otherwise stayed behind to let her brother perform his required duties. There would likely be plenty of opportunity to creep out the knight later on down the road.

The heavy footsteps echoed of Dastan’s arrival as he made his way over and greeted his guest with an amiable demeanor. “Sir…Hepburn?”

It took a combination of observation and a quick follow-up from Lucien to determine the general calling that this man hailed from. Reaching out he gave the other man the offer to shake hands while asking, “I am told you come on behalf of the King. I assume you have your sigil and papers in order to substantiate your arrival?”

Given everything that had been transpiring in Hebron with the King’s attempted assassination, Dastan had to play it cautiously whenever someone he didn’t recognize showed up claiming to come under flag of King and country.

Seamus followed his escort willingly into the foyer, leaving his effects behind for the time being. He had a habit of traveling lightly anyway, and he was not looking to make his arrival in Welch Run to give the impression of invasion. He had not been kept waiting long before Lord Dastan arrived, and he shook the man's offered hand gladly. The red and white cloak, and the large heavy shield on his back were typically only for ceremony, but he wore them today to make his position clear. When he had released the other man, his hand snaked into his tunic to pull his orders from their hiding place. "My assignment comes directly from the Knight of Autumn, my lord." That was Guy Durand's prerogative of course, even if Seamus would have preferred that Dastan be given advanced notice of his coming.

Allowing De Angelis to peruse his directive, Seamus fell back and looked around. "My orders are to assist you however I can in soliciting the assistance of the crown, be it military, economic, or just for counsel, my lord. I am happy to lend my services in helping train the guard, or establishing a patrol, or any other such matters that might be within my abilities. That being said, I will have reports to make to his grace, but I do not wish to interfere in your daily life." Simple quarters by the training yard would suit him fine. If he was lucky, Welch Run would be a quiet place, with ample time to read.

Taking the orders from Seamus, he perused through the documents and listened to the man’s words. There had been some mention of the King contacting him at some point to receive updates on the current affairs of Welch Run, but the details were fuzzy on Dastan’s account. Not to mention that he didn’t often remember a whole heck of a lot of details, that was Silvia’s department.

“Knight of Autumn…” He murmured softly before folding the papers back up and tucking them in his clothing to put away later on. It seemed like the King was trading his brother for a knight. This would certainly be interesting, especially given the type of company that was bound to follow the poor man about once discovered. However Dastan would leave that lovely tidbit to himself and let Seamus find out the quirks of the house all on his own.

“Well this is interesting. I lose a brother but gain a knight.” A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth before nodding and replying back. “I’ll make sure to have proper accommodations per your station provided for you. You’ll want to speak with Captain Bristol in regards to any training regimes or updates that could be made or utilized while you are here. After you settle in I can figure out if there is anything else I could have you look into. Since my brother will be with the King now, I might as well delegate some of his former duties to you.”

Danny could certainly prompt him on all of the statuses of the Peregrine girls, so Dastan further added, “He leaves on the sixteenth I believe, so you’ll want to speak with him soon to gain some insight.”

"It's strictly routine, my lord," Seamus told him, looking unconcerned. House Hepburn had been living with a Knight of the Shield since the man was a young boy. As were all the other major houses, including the Peregrines, likely. Undoubtedly however, the man who preceded him here in Welch Run had fled or been killed in the uprising. Durand had left him no instructions to investigate the matter, and therefor Seamus didn't deign to broach the topic.

Taking mental notes of the names and titles that were given to him, the Hepburn man nodded. "I am grateful for your hospitality, Lord De Angelis. And I'm happy to lend any assistance if I can," he said in a pleasant voice, though he maintained some trepidation over the way Dastan had given him the information. As far as he knew, he was not a servant, and shouldn't have a list of chores, unless that list came from Hebron. But, Seamus was not a lazy man, and he was happy to pass the time making friends and accomplishing a few tasks if he could.

"I shall be happy to meet with your entire family, my lord. And to protect them as if they were my own," he added with a small nod. "In the meantime, if I may inquire, were you and your kin planning on attending the coming events in Aston? I was hoping to see my nephews, if time allowed."

Anything that was strictly routine often lead to something quite different. But in this case Dastan would have to make due in housing a knight as a guest addition to their retinue. If this was what the King wanted then he would certainly accommodate. However, like all individuals under the De Angelis household, everyone pulled their weight. Since he was losing Danny to the Crown as an insurance policy, Seamus Hepburn would end up being a suitable replacement for some of the things that didn’t require a more delicate touch. The knight seemed agreeable to it all, and so it appeared things would be fine in this regard.

Seamus seemed up to the task regardless, and his comment about protecting the family as his own brought a smirk to Dastan’s lips. “Yes, well…it might just be me, my two sisters, and my son since Danny is going to be with the King and my aunt lives in our previous residence with her family. Everyone else here is simply an extension of camaraderie from our initial residence.” When it was mentioned about the Sheridan party that would take place in Aston, Dastan nodded and further responded, “So far I believe it will just be Silvia and I going, but you are more than welcome to join us, certainly.”

Dastan was always laid back about the comings and goings of individuals, especially those who were not particularly close. But in this case the knight had family attending and it seemed only right to let the man spend time with them. There was nothing Dastan felt particularly beholden to prevent Seamus from being accommodated in that manner.

It then dawned on him the warning he should give the man, “Oh yes, one thing…when you meet my sister Secily, try not to be too startled. She doesn’t bite…much.”

The last time he promised an individual that Secily kept her teeth to herself, she left several marks on the man’s arm. Mostly Dastan felt like it was a jest in order to prevent him from using that expression too many times. “She has a habit of popping up out of nowhere, so don’t feel bad if you didn’t hear her coming. It’s not a lack of skill on your part so much as I think she’s made of shadows and pixie dust because I can’t find any logical explanation of how she does it.”

Seamus had a knack for filing information, which is undoubtedly why he had been chosen for this position. Taking in all of what Dastan had to offer, he smiled knowingly. A small amount of relief washed over him when it turned out that they would be going to Aston after all. Explaining his absence to Satrina, even with an order from the king, would not have been easy. "I'm grateful," he told the man with a genuine sense of appreciation. "I have two newly born nephews that I have not yet seen, and I have spent little time with my sister since her marriage to Lord Hallward."

Standing, as he sensed the meeting was coming to an end, he paused at the mention of Secily. "No warning is required, my lord. I fear I have already been briefed on the nature of your sister," he said with a smile. "I am as prepared as I ever will be, I think." Grant had been skeptical when he had said the same in Maple Glade, but they were only speaking about a girl, how much trouble could she be?

"If there is nothing else, my lord, I shall see about speaking with your brother. I have a few effects to unpack, but I doubt that it should take me very long." He would wait to be dismissed, and then find someone to help him find the barracks. He didn't want to bother Dastan with the query, or to give the impression that he wasn't capable of finding his own way.
