The Unlikely Deliverer [9/24, morning, Royals & Romanovs, OPEN]

It had taken him several tries in South Huntswalk, and Wilhelm had continued to instruct him along the way. Learning how to administrate a vaccine wasn’t exactly as easy as he thought, but in time Marcus had gotten the rhythm down to a point where he wasn’t totally messing up. Naturally Wilhelm was extremely skilled in the art of precise movement upon the human body, so obtaining his level of expertise was a great help.

The first batch of the cure created in Balfour came with them in Romanov carriages lining up long behind the initial one that carried the brothers in tow. Lord and heir sat together as they made their way to Moorford Estates to be the ones to administrate to the royal family. Marcus had been delegated this task for multiple reasons. The Baptistes and Gardiners were busy in their areas, and the other families were helping in other regions. For the most part, many of the house lords managed to keep themselves alive. The Romanovs, however, had exchanged multiple heirs in a manner of months before it finally seemed to halt upon the unlikeliest of individuals.

Having Marcus be the one to bring the cure offered many symbols of House Romanov’s commitment to Balfour, as well as leave a favorable mark compared to the last time he had been here. However Marcus was a bit oblivious to what had happened in the past. Instead, he focused on the fact that he needed to introduce himself formally to the King and the rest of the royals, so that is what he agreed to do.

“Come. Perhaps you can help me not make a complete idiot of myself.” Marcus winked to his brother as they made their way out of the carriage and were escorted to the main room where the King was likely waiting for them. The Lady Baptiste had sent word and made arrangements ahead of time to be expecting a messenger of the new Romanov House Lord to come with the cure. As they were both escorted forward, Marcus made his way to the King and gave a formal bow in greeting before introducing himself.

“Your Majesty, I am Lord Marcus of the House of Romanov.” He gestured to his brother and further added, “This is my brother, Lord Wilhelm Romanov. We have come to deliver the efforts of House Baptise with the skills of House Gardiner in providing relief to the illness that has gripped our country.”

In the two weeks that followed her return to Moorford, Tatianna had been very subdued, even withdrawn. The knowledge that Langston had betrayed them all and tried to kill the sister that was so dear to her was a crushing blow she hadn't started to recover from even a little. Fearing that Lochlan might start to wonder about her, that she might have played a part in the effort to kill Nataliah and her husband, she said little and kept to herself, seldom leaving her rooms. With the plague still going on and the palace largely uninhabited, it wasn't hard for Tianna to be the recluse.

She knew of the cure that reached Balfour's shores, being on the same ship as Lady Evangeline Baptiste. Aware that the production of that cure had begun in earnest after Eva reached her home of South Huntswalk, Tianna was not surprised to hear of someone bringing the cure to Moorford, and that it was the current Lord of House Romanov. Not knowing that the title had changed hands several times, she had no idea that the Lord in question was the notorious Marcus Romanov. Her presence was expected to receive the messenger, so she put forth an effort to join her brother and sister in law when he arrived.

Standing quietly to one side of Lochlan's chair, Tatianna didn't hide her confusion or astonishment when Marcus entered with Lord Wilhelm beside him. She had heard that the new Lord of the House was coming, so what was he doing here? The cure was a wonderful thing, but she looked over at her brother and Jacquelyn curiously. What was going on here?

Even though she was tucked away to the side, Tatianna was not someone he could easily forget. After he made his formal introductions his blue eyes glanced over in her direction briefly. A twitch of a knowing smile lit up his features before he faced forwards once more. No sooner had they first met they were immediately split apart due to familial and political circumstances. Clearly their little interlude on the dance floor from before caught the eyes of many who did not approve of the level of comfort the two were sharing in that fleeting moment of time. Pretty soon she was sent to Tuneric and he was off going about on his own adventures. The two torn by time and occupied by other affairs.

Marcus never corresponded with her since then, so seeing her stationed nearby was like a moment of secret nostalgia. The air becoming a bit heavier with an intensity that wasn’t hostile. On the contrary, it was a kind of heat that flared up for that brief moment when the two exchanged glances.

Now that he was lord of House Romanov was his position favorable to the King that stood before him? Would correspondences change now that there was some level of weight in regards to title by his name? It was an interesting gambit that Marcus would have to test as he looked back to Lochlan and smirked, “It has been a while since I was last here. Hopefully you received my letter several months ago?”

The letter from Lady Baptiste had sparked a strange feeling for the Queen of Balfour. She almost dared not hope that relief from the plague that threatened to wipe their country clear of people was possible, lest they be disappointed; but that very hesitation felt treasonous and terrible. Could she be blamed, though? They had heard word for months of their own brilliant minds working hard on finding some medicine to help, and all efforts had failed. But now, it seemed that Tuneric had held the key the whole time? It was difficult to believe, but she supposed the only way to be convinced was to see it in action, and to wait to hear of its success.

When word had come that carriages had been seen approaching, the household had gone into something of a flurry. The castle was still largely on lockdown, with these visitors being the first allowed in - apart from the princess - for months. Rooms had been prepared for them as soon as the letter had come, but Jacquelyn had made sure to double check everything before taking her place beside her husband to greet their guests. This small step back toward a normal life felt momentous to Jacquelyn, and she wanted to be sure everything went well.

Jacquelyn took stock of the two men who walked through the door to present themselves. Both handsome, one darker than the other, and these untested men were the new Romanov lord and his heir. Time would tell if they would be up to the task, but she knew that Lochlan would be weighing them from the very start.

"We are pleased to welcome you and your brother, Lord Romanov. I hope you will accept our condolences for the losses your family has sustained." Jacquelyn kept her greeting short, not wishing to step on Lochlan's toes, so to speak. While she knew she could speak more freely now than she ever could when she sat beside Luther, some habits were harder to break than others.

Lochlan had already decided how he'd handle this situation but when he saw the man enter he was sure of the actions he'd take at that moment. Marcus bowed and the King gestured for him to straighten himself. "Come no closer." He finally spoke and his voice, though a bit tired, was still strong. He gestured for his Doctors to approach the Lord and his brother. "You will understand our need to be careful. I am sure that you have taken steps to consume the cure for your own well being but I intend to have you examined first for the well being of my family."

He watched the Lord's eyes fall upon Tatianna and he attempted not to allow it to anger him. "I had received your letter as well as some from other houses." Lochlan had not given Marcus a reason that he had not responded but he finally, after a minute of silence, shifted in his seat before answering. "We did not allow anyone, or mail for that matter, into the castle until recently." The desperate attempt to protect his family was apparent. There would be no apology, there would be no further conversation on the matter, and he'd noted that the Queen apologized for the losses that house Romanov suffered.

"Do you feel as though the position you have been placed in, as head of your family, is a position you are able to fill properly?" His tone made it clear that he was back to business and making sure that the new Lord of House Romanov could handle what would be required, no, expected of him.

Many travels of Marcus had been done in the presence of Wilhelm, but there was something about this one that had the younger Romanov brother questioning his decision. They were after all visiting the royals and Wilhelm was anything, but a sociable and normal guest to present. However, the young man as the current heir to the house had to change this and to some extent this trip was a good start to do so or at least see how badly he'd fail. In a way, there could be no greater failure than in front of the royals and no matter how bad he'd turn out here, it would be impossible to do worse anywhere else afterwards.

“Oh no worries, I'll make sure to be more of an idiot than you.” Wilhelm replied to his brother's comment. His brown eyes stared at the sight outside the carriage as they arrived at their destination. The heir followed from a step back the messenger and his brother to the main room where the royals were positioned to welcome them. He watched Marcus do the presentation. Wilhelm smiled before bowing lightly as he was presented to them.

“With all due respect, what type of examination are we speaking of, your grace?” Wilhelm broke his silence as he lightly bowed his head in an effort to ease the disturbance his inquiry probably caused to the royals. His brown eyes moved from the man to those he assumed were the doctors as they approached them. “As a practitioner of medicine myself, my brother's health state has been well recorded and I may answer any fears your doctors could have while saving ourselves the time restraints that an actual new examination by your men would require.” Wilhelm added in an attempt to explain further his inquiry. It seemed he was after all going to make a fool of himself worse than his brother would.

The way the discussion moved quickly to his brother’s capabilities to rule their house only made his inquiry feel like it was going to cause a bad start to this visit.

Since their meetings during her presentation, Tatianna had not heard from or seen Marcus Romanov. She had been gone for almost a year in Tuneric with her sister and never so much as a letter was sent to her. True, she hadn't written either, but that was a kind of boldness that Tianna hadn't fully learned yet. She continued to stand by Lochlan and Jacquelyn, jerking in surprise when Lochlan confirmed that Marcus was now in fact the Lord of Old Havenwich and head of House Romanov.

Blue eyes turned back to him, frankly studying his face. Tianna remembered his relief that he was so far from inheriting a position of real responsibility, but the plague had other ideas. Lord Wilhelm was just as much a stranger to her now that he had been a year ago, so it was Marcus that held her attention. She did not see the reaction out of Lochlan when Marcus looked at her and smiled, but she also hadn't blushed either. This was all so strange to her.

Fortunately, the demands of Lochlan drew an answering question from Lord Wilhelm, along with a touch of the Romanov way that she recognized. Even Lord Alexander had that little bit of confidence that was just short of arrogance, it was good to know that it was a family trait. Still she stood silent, not invited to speak and not having anything to say. Lochlan was King, and she was here just as moral support.

The queen was unsurprised that Lochlan had commanded the visitors cease their approach. He was singularly protective of his family, and almost his every move in these past months had been for their benefit. Balfour would prosper once more, when his gaze could fully and freely touch each of his subjects, and provide the same care and protection to them once more, as was their due.

She was, however, a little surprised at his questioning of the young Lord Romanov. Not necessarily that it was happening; it was inevitable that he should want to take stock in this man who'd newly come to power as the result of great family tragedy. But that it was happening now, immediately, instead of having the men sequestered for their examination, seemed odd. Nevertheless, Jacquelyn trusted Lochlan's instinct without question, and she sat beside him, supportive in his every measure.

Lord Romanov's brother spoke for him, to preempt the question of their health, but Jacquelyn wasn't entirely sure if the man's assurances would be fully trusted. After the life they'd led, conspiracy could lurk in every corner, and if the intent were to bring illness into the castle then what better way than to have a 'doctor' speak for their health? She did not believe that was their intent, not at all, especially since they'd been endorsed by the Baptiste family, but there was no such thing as being too careful. With a flick of her hand, she called a servant over. "Have the first parlor prepared, so that any medical conversation between the physicians may take place comfortably." Her words were low, but Lochlan would likely have heard them, and hopefully approved, although the necessity of her orders was not yet a proven thing. The parlor she'd indicated wasn't far off this chamber, and as such wasn't terribly deep within the castle itself. If there were a reason to worry about the spread of infection, that would keep it fairly well contained. Or at least, that was the hope.
