An Uncertain Homecoming - 10/10, afternoon, Taldorach, Lars & Lex & Others [closed]

The twins had left as early as they could that morning, and had pushed hard to make good time. The horses were barely allowed rest, and although Lexington felt pity for the animals, there weren't many options. They had to get to the Moor as soon as possible; it had only been two days since they'd received Karenna's letter, but that in itself might have been too long. The only concession they made that hindered their speed was that they rode in armor - after all, they had been warned in no uncertain terms that they were riding into a trap.

Lexington shifted under his breastplate, rolling his shoulders against the creaking leather straps. He'd worn his spare set, leaving the more ceremonial official armor back in Hebron, and the fit was just different enough that he wasn't used to it anymore. Or perhaps he was simply uncomfortable because of what faced them. It was a comfort knowing that Percival wasn't far, their brother knight staying hidden for now, but the many unknown factors were forefront in his mind. Had they been fast enough? Had whatever guest Karenna spoke of caused them harm? And who would be bold - nay, mad enough to directly threaten his family and invade Taldorach?

The roads they traveled were familiar, despite how infrequently the twins returned home these days, and Lex could feel his anxiety increasing as they passed the markers which told him they were almost home. Rounding the last bend, the castle of Taldorach emerged from the trees, straddling the river and looking for all the world to be operating completely normally. His eyes found the guards posted to watch the road, and as they approached he saw one of them turn and shout, although the words were indistinct due to the distance and the sound of the river.

"Looks like they're expecting us." Of course they both knew that was the case, but sarcasm had always been a way of dealing with stress, and now was no different. They continued their approach, increasingly aware of the flurry of activity behind their home's walls. Pulling the horses to a stop before the gates, he looked to his twin as he heard their names being announced within. "Are you ready?"

"The twins have crossed the last tributary," the young man who had been sent to lookout reported. He was out of breath from his run, and the old and rusted stiletto was twisted in his belt. The handful of men standing with him around the table were not much better equipped, and they were all looking at Percival uncertainly.

The Sword of Summer had taken the road to the west, keeping closer to the coast so his approach would not be noticed. He had come without armor, and had swapped steeds at local farms along the way, so that he could be in position when Lexington and Larson arrived. He was tired and hungry, as he sure they would be as well. The locals had little in the way of information for him when it came to what was happening in the keep, but they all agreed that traffic had been minimal in the last week, and there was some concern about the welfare of the duke and his family. When Percy had arrived, a group of them had been preparing to approach the hold, just to make an inquiry, but he had stopped them.

The small village was fond of the knight, and his adopted family. It was here on the bank of the river that Percy had saved the little girl who was stranded in the hurricane, and the men of the area had not forgotten his service. They stood at the ready to do what they could. For now, the plan was simple. Let the twins pass through and confront the first line of danger. If it broke into open fighting, or if the twins did not signal after an allotted amount of time, Percy and his group would breach the castle through the gated streams that ran under Taldorach.

Unbeknownst to their aggressor, and to the twins, was that if everything went to hell, Bosleigh Hepburn and the hobelars of Maple Glade were stationed just a day away, in case the three knights and their allies should fail. Vengence was a poor substitute for victory, Percy knew. But he was prepared to die, and if he did, so would his killers. "They'll reach the gates within the hour," Percival said, still unsure what the twins plan would be. "We need to be in position by then..."

The ride was long and they had very little time to rest. They were heading into a trap, or so they were told, but what in the hells was really going on in their home? Larson was prepared, or as well as he could be, to fight for his home but it was hard when they had little to no information about what they were riding toward. There was silence between the twins and for the first time in a long time Larson had little to say, not even a smart assed remark or a quick joke to lighten the mood.

    Now was not the time.

He was angry and there was that fear pushing at the back of his mind. Would he be able to defend his family?

"Looks like they're expecting us." There was a pause. "Are you ready?"

    "Let's do this."
