Where the Breadcrumbs End - Caeli Nidos, 11/04, afternoon - Jenner/Mari/Alina/Rose

It had been a remarkably quiet few weeks in the aftermath of their new arrival and the drama she had ushered into their lives. Business had quite returned to normal, and Jenner Pavon had been able to resume his daily routine, which mostly included relaxing, reading, and avoiding his family, should they attempt to visit. Indeed, things had been looking so much for the better that he had even taken to handling less of the day to day aspect of the keep, and delegating more to his trusted confidante Violet, whose new cherry desk and high-backed (and cushioned) chair now dominated the better part of his study. He would not venture to say they were a couple, but the fact that he preferred her to be nearby even as he lounged and leisured obviously helped solidify her label as a companion.

Roselin Yarwood was comfortably installed upstairs, and while he had lessened her burdens in the wake of her brother's passing, Jenner was far from giving her near the freedom that Mari was afforded. It was true that the king's cousin had warmed to him, with the help of a little bit of drink and a torrent of grief, but women were wily creatures, and the Lord of Lawnbury remained unconvinced that she would not attempt to flee if she was given the opportunity.

Lifting a grape from the bowl on the end table, Jenner casually lobbed it across the room at Violet, catching her on the arm as she was busy writing something at her desk. He quickly raised his book in front of his face and acted casual, as though he had nothing to do with the assault. But before the girl could even turn on him, the door to his study swung open. A young servant appeared, looking demure, but with a well armed guardsman at her shoulder. As she stepped away, the man came forward. "My lord, there is a woman at the gates requesting an audience. She says she is a servant of Elston Yarwood."

Folding the book closed, Jenner turned to look at Mari. He gave her a look that said she would have to go see about the visitor. "Show her to the antechamber," he told the man. "Provide her with refreshment, and inform her that she will be attended shortly." The guard and servant nodded and fled the room.

Looking back to Violet, Jenner sighed. "Send word for Roselin to remain in her chambers, as I will be coming to speak with her." He wouldn't. Not immediately. But if he left orders for her to await him there, she wouldn't run into the intruder. "Then see about our guest. Divine what she knows, if anything. I will join you shortly."

Mariana had only a moment to frown at the disorderly jog the grape had inserted into her otherwise neat writing before the study door opened. She had half a mind to scold the girl who entered first for not knocking, but the guard who entered after stayed her tongue, and she listened as he delivered his announcement.

She had to admit, a member of Elston Yarwood's household come calling was the last thing she'd expected to hear. Weren't they all to have died of plague? Mari was suspicous, for more than a few reasons. Meeting Jenner's eyes, Mari gave a small nod to confirm and reached to close the ink well. Her eyes fell on the grape once more, and she popped it into mouth while he gave her his orders. "It will be as you say, my lord." Rising, Violet smoothed her skirt and turned to Jenner, bowing to excuse herself.

A quick command to one of her serving girls saw the first bit of Jenner's task for her finished, and Mari lingered for a moment to watch the girl hurry away in the direction of Rose's room. From there it wasn't far to the place that Jenner had ordered their visitor to be stashed, and Mariana entered with a cool smile on her face. "Good afternoon," she greeted, inclining her head slightly. "My name is Violet. Lord Pavon will be to see you shortly, and he has asked that I attend to you in the meantime." She kept her expression friendly, her posture slightly relaxed. She hoped that perhaps the girl would feel more comfortable to speak to a fellow member of the serving class; there was little need for their guest to know that Mari was a little more than just your average serving girl.

"Can I get you a drink? If it's true you've come all the way from Chatlawn Hills, you must be exhausted." Mariana moved toward the sideboard, ready to fetch whatever the girl asked for. "My sincerest condolences for what happened to the Yarwoods," she went on, shaking her head. "Such a tragedy. And so scary, to think that something like that can wipe out an entire family as if it were nothing."

Losing hope was not an option. Lady Roselyn was still out there somewhere, and Alina would be the one to find her. By now, the lady had undoubtedly heard of the demise of the rest of her family and was keeping her distance to avoid falling ill herself. That was understandable. Hopefully Roselyn would not object to having one of her former servants back in her employ, wherever it was she’d ended up. The loss of the entire Yarwood family as well as her own had been frightening enough. The idea of striking out on her own and attempting to find new employment on top of all that was downright terrifying. Truth be told, Alina would not know where to start. She needed something familiar, and that was exactly why she clung so firmly to the belief that Roselyn was still out there somewhere, alive and well.

The journey, the search… it had been grueling for the poor young woman. To journey through a land still in recovery from the plague on her own had been dangerous, and without much in the way of money she’d had to rely on the limited kindness of strangers while she traveled from town to town. She was underfed, tired, and finding it more difficult to keep her optimism alive with each negative response. No one had seen her. There had been a few sightings of women that might be the lady in question, but those were quickly eliminated based on a number of factors. So she moved on. She’d nearly been to every town on the island over the last few weeks. If there was no trace in Lawnbury Hills, she would move on to Caldwater Hold and then hopefully cross to the eastern island.

It seemed that luck hadn’t entirely abandoned her yet. A man in town had seen a woman matching Roselyn’s description heading up to the castle. It was much like the other clues she’d gotten in other towns, but of course she had to follow up. She couldn’t leave town until she knew for certain that the lady was not here. Disturbing the lord of the castle was not something she was eager to do, but Roselyn would be more likely to want to interact with someone of her own station so she figured it would be the best place to look. It wasn’t even that long a wait before she was escorted inside, and in the antechamber she waited, hands clasped nervously in front of her.

A beautiful brunette woman entered the space. “Good afternoon to you as well, Violet. My name is Alina,” she replied to the woman’s greeting. It seemed like the woman was a servant, but with her elegance and poise it seemed almost a waste. In response to the woman’s query about whether or not she would like a drink, she shook her head slowly. “Thank you, but no. Hopefully I will not be disturbing the entire household for long. I merely wish to ask Lord Pavon a question.” The mention of the terrible ruin the plague had caused the Yarwood family, and her own, brought a great deal of sadness to Alina’s already weary features. “Yes… the plague tore apart many families. That is why I am here, in fact. Lady Roselyn left home before the plague struck, and I have been searching for her. One of the merchants in town mentioned that someone matching her description was headed this way, so I was hoping Lord Pavon might be able to verify her identity. And if it really was her… perhaps he could tell me where she was bound when she left.” Maybe that was bold of her, but journeying to five other towns with no results had lessened her patience for small talk and pleasantries. All she wanted was information, and then she could move on after hearing the bad news.

For a few moments, Jenner sat in silence, his fingers steepled before his pursed lips. It seemed that an interminable amount of time passed, surrounded by quiet. At this point, he had expected to hear Rose shouting protests and demanding to see the visitor, but there was nothing of her on the air. As he rose and paced to the window, the Lord of Lawnbury sighed lightly as he gazed over the rolling hill that led down to the town below. He had to wonder who would come next, and what they might want from him. He had lived the last few months in relative peace, but now that this harbinger had come to his door, there was no telling who might follow her path. He would have to begin to mobilize. And that meant figuring out the Roselin Yarwood matter as soon as possible.

Turning back to the door, Jenner made his way into the hall, venturing away from the quarters where Rose was hopefully sequestering herself, the man descended the stairs down to the audience chamber. Even if he wasn't ready to meet his guest, he did want a look at her. The guard didn't mention an escort, and Jenner was curious to see what kind of creature would venture into his den on their own.

Rounding the bottom of the flight, the lord stopped outside of the room. Leaning against the wall, he listened intently, waiting to see how Mari would handle the guest, and what he might discern about her from a distance. He would have to eventually enter and introduce himself, but there was still a few moments before he would be seen as rude for not appearing.

The girl's name didn't sound familiar to Mariana, but she hadn't expected to; for now it would be enough to commit it to memory in case it was important later. With a hospitable wave of her hand, Mari gestured to the chairs arranged about the room. "Then please, if I cannot tempt you with a drink, then at least make yourself comfortable while you wait. I am unsure how long Lord Pavon's business will keep him, and you must be weary from your travels."

She listened to the girl's tale, and if she felt any surprise at hearing that a merchant had not only recognized Roselin but had also seen her head to the castle, she did not express it. It was certainly news that Jenner would need to hear, though, lest someone else come looking for the young Lady Yarwood who could do a bit more damage than a serving girl. "I cannot ease your mind as to how he might answer your inquiry," she said, her voice sympathetic. "Has someone sent you to search for her, or did you undertake the task on your own? I can't think of what I would do if I found myself in such a place. You must have been close to the family, to wish to search them out rather than just finding employment elsewhere."

The ease with which Mariana put on the affectations of a simple servant was impressive; she sat on the edge of her chair, as if expecting at any moment to be called away. Her fingers fiddled with a seam on her apron, giving the impression of hands unused to being idle. Having come from the humblest of beginnings, it was not at all as if she were playing a part; she was simply showing another facet of herself. It wasn't terribly long ago, after all, that she had been the sort of girl who would have jumped at a chance to speak to someone new, who shared her station and with whom she could speak more freely than she ever could with the normal visitors who expected her to be seen and not heard.

Pausing for a moment after she spoke, Violet looked as if suddenly remembering herself and made to apologize. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to pry. It's just that I can't help but be curious, after having so little news of the rest of the country during the plague. We rarely get visitors anyway, so when one comes with a situation like yours, I'm afraid I lose myself and my manners." Folding her hands in her lap, she offered a tentative smile. "It's almost like one of those stories you hear as a child. I hope very much that this one has a happy ending for everyone."

Alina was grateful for the offer of a seat. With a small smile, she made her way to one of the indicated chairs and slowly lowered herself. Her eyes slid slowly closed as she took a moment to relish the relative comfort of the chair in comparison to other places her backside had rested in recent times. The back of a hay cart was not meant as a form of transportation for human beings. She’d been picking hay out of her hair for days, and that was only a mild annoyance in comparison to how sore she’d been. So much traveling, but all that had led her here. Hopefully she would find a clue here. Hopefully she would find herself one step closer to finding Lady Roselin.

When her eyes opened again a moment later, she refocused on the woman who’d introduced herself as Violet. “There was no one left to tell me what to do. I came on my own in search of her. I… didn’t know what else to do. My family has served hers for generations. The thought of finding employment elsewhere did not even occur to me.” Her gaze drifted down to her hands, folded carefully in her lap. “I suppose if I can find no trace of her, that is exactly what I will have to do, though.” That was a depressing thought. She didn’t even know where to start with searching for employment. It was not a problem she’d ever expected to have. It wasn’t like she could just walk up to a random castle and offer her services to the ruling family. There was no way she’d be able to work up the courage to do something that reckless.

“No need to apologize, Miss Violet. Curiosity is nothing to regret in a situation like this. Rather, I fear my weeks of traveling have left me with little in the way of manners. Please forgive me for my impertinence.” Alina felt impatient, just wanting to see Lord Pavon and find out once and for all whether he had any of the information she sought. But she did not wish to seem rude to this woman, who’d done nothing but be polite.

With a small wave of her hand, Violet acknowledge and dismissed their visitor's apology. "Don't worry about a thing," she said kindly. "Your manners are better than mine would be, I'm sure, had I been traveling on my own for as long as you have on that sort of mission." She paused, and gestured back over to where the teapot and a jug sat on a table against the wall. "You're sure I can't get you a drink? While you're stuck waiting anyway, I feel as though I should be helping you get a comfort or two that may be scarce while you're on the road."

Although she knew the danger of letting this woman linger too long, she felt genuine sympathy toward her. The thought of having all her security, everything she'd worked for, taken away in one fell swoop by something as uncontrollable as a plague...it was a horrific thing to ponder. Mariana was usually thankful for their quiet life, but seeing what could have happened to her and the rest of the girls, she was even more glad for it.

She nearly thought to mention that she could probably use the Yarwoods' relation to the King to gain employment when she couldn't find Rose, but Mari bit the thought back before it found voice. Alina had already mentioned that she was not sent by anyone, so it didn't do to bring up the royal association. She couldn't risk giving the girl the idea to bring her problem to the crown and have them get involved. Instead, she offered some other advice.

"Perhaps if things...well, if you find yourself needing work, you might have the best luck in the city around Chatlawn. Some of the richer merchants will likely know your family since you've served the Yarwoods for as long as you said. They're always more likely to hire a girl from a noble's house, and if you know the city and are from a respectable working family, it's even better." Even as a servant, a name could get you in where otherwise you'd be overlooked. Mari had little doubt the girl would be able to find work, if she went about it the right way.

The prolonged eavesdropping had assured Jenner that the newcomer knew little about his home, and even less about the whereabouts of Roselin Yarwood. But this acquired information was not about to make him lax in his speech with the woman. He knew precious little about her, and therefore would make a point of not underestimating her.

When he came around the corner, he nodded lightly at Mari. "My apologies, good woman," he said to the guest, not assuming anything about her age. "I understand you have come a long way, and suppose that your business must be urgent, otherwise I shall have to chastise my servants for not offering you a room to rest before seeing me." It was not a stretch on Jenner's part in thinking that the girl would have little interest in lingering if her mistress was not here. "As you no doubt have guessed, I am Lord Jenner Pavon, Master of the House. I have no doubt that Violet has endeavored to make you feel at home. But I realize that you are not. How might I be of service," he asked.

Moving to take a seat, the lord crossed his legs and folded his hands in his lap. He did his best to keep his body open to the guest, lest he give her the impression he had something to hide. He had caught the tail end of Mari discussing future employment with the girl, but the keep was more than large enough to host the woman for a few days, until she either gave up on her search, or decided to take up residence in town.

Alina looked when Violet gestured toward the available beverages. For the woman to offer a second time, well, she didn’t want to be rude and keep refusing. “Actually, a cup of tea would be nice. Thank you.” That was something she hadn’t had in quite a while by this point. It would be relaxing for her to be able to enjoy one in the safety of this castle before she had to return to the road. Though to be perfectly honest, she might not have accepted it at all if it weren’t for Violet and her sympathetic ear. Not everyone would have given her this kind of welcome. The beautiful woman even gave her some advice in terms of how and where she might be able to find work if she was unable to reunite with Roselin. “Going back to Chatlawn if I fail to locate Lady Roselin would be difficult for me, I think, after all that has happened. But I thank you for your advice. I will certainly keep it in mind.”

There wasn’t much more time for chit chat before the man she’d been waiting to see arrived. She stood the moment he entered the room and curtsied politely when he was done speaking. “Lord Pavon, thank you for seeing me. I promise not to take any more of your time than necessary, as I realize you must be a busy man.” She stopped for a moment, looking downward in an attempt to rally her energy but also to remind herself that this could very well just be another dead end. She shouldn’t get her hopes up too much. “My name is Alina, a servant of House Yarwood. No doubt you have heard of the tragedy which befell that house recently...” She proceeded to tell him her story, about how her family had also been taken by the plague and how she’d been searching for Lady Roselin ever since. It was a longer story than she’d like, considering she knew that she was taking up this man’s valuable time. Hopefully he would not grow impatient with her. “A merchant in the village said that a woman matching Lady Roselin’s description had stopped by his shop inquiring about a new saddle, and that many of the products she’d admired had come from your house. So he recommended she come speak to someone here if she was in search of a custom piece.” Whether or not she’d actually come to this place, the merchant had not been entirely certain. “If she did come to Lawnbury, I was hoping you might know which direction she was headed when she left.” That was a pretty big if, but she had to explore all possibilities before she could give up.

Mariana had just risen from the seat she'd perched on when Jenner rounded the corner, and she curtseyed to him quickly before his attention turned to their visitor. Her roll now shifted, and as she turned her back on the pair to prepare Alina's tea, she listened keenly to what was being said. While she waited for the leaves to steep she prepared Jenner a drink, as well, anticipating what he was most likely to want and setting it on the table beside him when she delivered Alina's tea to her.

Retreating back to stand near the door, Mariana took on the familiar stance of waiting to either be dismissed or required, her hands behind her back and her gaze carefully to the ground. Fading into the background was a skill she still employed on a regular basis, most especially when the Pavon family gathered at the castle for their meeting and meal that Jenner almost never attended. There, too, her job was primarily to observe and remember anything noteworthy, but here she was more curious as to the eventual outcome. It seemed the more obvious choice that Alina couldn't stay here, couldn't find out that Rose was not only alive but in the same building. But Jenner had surprised her before, and especially if this girl struck his fancy, she could see where he might entertain the thought of letting her stay.

If asked her opinion, she wasn't quite sure what she'd say. It wasn't as if Roselin was a guest, staying by her own free will. She was, or at least she had been, intended to join the ranks of the serving staff; how would Alina react to seeing her former master having the same status as she did? There were some women who would revel in that sort of thing, who would find great joy in being on equal footing and being better at the tasks they were expected to carry out. Alina, however, did not strike her as that sort of woman.

Jenner said nothing in response to the woman as Mari floated about the chamber. He merely watched in polite silence as she went and waited by the door. He did not move to dismiss her though, and let her stand there. For her to leave would be folly, because the Lord of Lawnbury had every intention of lying to his guest, and if his lieutenant were not there to hear his tales, then she could easily be trapped outside if she was questioned again and their stories did not match. Instead, he offered his Violet a nod of thanks and motioned for her to wait through the audience.

Lifting his cup of tea, Jenner nodded thoughtfully to Alina Sebring. "Unfortunately, I am aware of the plight at Chatlawn, my lady. Roselin Yarwood informed me of the circumstances herself." Pausing, Pavon sipped at his tea to let his statement sink in. A soft smile on his lips soon faded to a look of concern as he set the cup back down. "Your mistress was indeed here," he confirmed casually. "She had been in the town below looking for a new saddle for her mare when she entered my family's shoppes. Apparently she is a woman of shrewd taste and a willful nature," he added with a short chuckle. "When informed by my uncle that he could not sell her the saddle that she wanted because it was in my private holdings, she marched herself right up the side of the hill and knocked on my door." Turning, the man looked at Jameson as though he were waiting for her to confirm his story.

Retrieving the cup, he shook his head. "Needless to say, I was not about to deny a member of the royal family, even if she were only a cousin. And so I gave her written permission to obtain any saddle in my inventory at no charge, mostly out of respect for her determination." The man paused again to drink before setting the empty vessel on the edge of the table to be collected. "Sadly, after she left with my blessing and returned to the town, I heard no more from her."

Well, that was certainly more news of Roselin than Alina had heard since she began her search. Lord Pavon had actually seen her alive and well. “I am grateful that she is alive and well.” Alina sipped at her tea carefully since it was still quite hot. She was pensive. It seemed that this man did not know which direction Roselin had gone in. That was bad news for her, but at least she’d already done a fair bit of traveling, so there were only so many other places on the island that she could be. Her search was not destined to end here, it seemed. The weariness in her bones protested the very idea of moving on, but Alina knew that she had no choice. She couldn’t search forever, of course, but she could travel the entire kingdom of Balfour. Then, and only then, would she be willing to truly consider what else she might do with her life.

She was quiet for a long time. Probably too long, considering the importance of the man with whom she was currently sharing company. When her tea was gone, she placed the cup on the nearby table and stood up again. “I am very grateful that you took this time to speak with me, Lord Pavon. I will waste no more of your valuable time.” Curtseying politely, she turned toward Violet and nodded her head as a sign of respect. The last thing she wanted to do was seem rude to these people who’d so kindly given her their time, but there was no need for a lowly servant like her to hang around when her mistress was still somewhere out there.

It was a little odd to her that Lord Pavon hadn’t questioned the fact that Roselin was traveling by herself, but that was easily explained away as he probably thought it was none of his business. Or perhaps he thought her escort had remained in town while she came to the castle in search of that saddle.

As her lord spun his lies, Mariana stood largely forgotten by the door, her gaze seeming to settle on nothing but her attention on their guest. She needed to listen carefully to what Jenner said so she could perpetuate the same untruth, but she couldn't look away from Alina's face. The play of hope across her guarded features, seemingly erasing some of the weariness, only to have it settle back when that hope was diminished. It almost felt cruel to play with her this way, but it was a necessary course of action. There was only so much damage a servant could do, but if Alina knew the truth she couldn't be allowed to leave. And two unwilling women in their ranks might just be more than the Nest could currently handle.

Still, there was a not insignificant part of her that longed to somehow help the poor girl. It wasn't possible, but she wished there was a way they could house her for the night at least, to allow her the comfort of a warm bed beneath her and safe walls around her. But if she couldn't be allowed in the Nest, perhaps a provision could be made for her in the town. As soon as Alina was gone, she made a note to speak with Jenner about it.

As Alina rose to leave, Mari returned her nod of respect. She did not envy the woman her task, even if she had been facing a fairly-stacked deck.

Jenner had been lost in thought when the girl rose and curtsied, and his eyes flicked towards Mari coolly. The Lord of Lawnbury had made a life of playing fast and loose, and for the last handful of years, the woman in the corner had been the one buckling the straps back down to keep it all together. Perhaps she was due a raise, or at the least, an elaborate gift. He would have to consider the matter when the current one was resolved.

With a soft smile, the man turned back to Alina, and rose respectfully to be on even terms with her. "A missing woman is no trifling matter, my dear. You have no need to apologize." More to his present mind, was the fact that Rose had only recently become docile enough for him to even converse with. If she learned that Alina Sebring had been here, and she had not been informed, she would be insufferable. He was tired of an insufferable Rose. He would need to speak with her before her servant could be allowed to leave.

Lifting his hand he pulled two fingers into a hook three times, beckoning Violet to rejoin them. "But you must be road weary. I insist you stay for at least the night. Violet will prepare you a room." She would object, and in fact, he expected her to. He would do the same in her place. "I know that you are determined and in a rush, but the facts remain that my men and family know the town better than anyone. If Lady Yarwood is still there, or mentioned where she was headed, they would either know or discover it far more quickly than you. I shall dispatch riders immediately, and we will get you fed and bathed and rested in the meantime," he said with a smile.

Alina turned back to him with her eyes slightly widened. It wasn’t often that she was offered shelter in a noble house, much less help with her search. Much of the time she never even saw the ruling family, in fact. She often dealt with the heads of the household staff. “Lord Pavon… I wouldn’t…” she started, but he seemed to have foreseen any refusal she might have offered. His next statement cut her off, but she didn’t mind. She could certainly see the logic in what he was saying. Surely his men would be able to find any trace of where Roselin had gone much more easily than she would. They knew the people, after all, and were much more likely to get information out of them than a complete stranger like her would be.

After a moment of further hesitation, she nodded slowly. “I would be grateful for you assistance, milord,” she finally responded. It wasn’t possible for her to deny that she needed a good night’s sleep. And a wash too, probably. That was the regrettable part of so much traveling. “One night. I would not wish to trespass on your kindness any longer than that.” She hoped he wouldn’t think her rude, but she wouldn’t allow herself more time than that, as tempting as it would undoubtedly be to stay and rest longer if the choice was offered to her. There was someone that she needed to find before she could allow herself to relax in that way.

The tone with which Jenner spoke made Mariana curious as to his motives. Even after this long, he was a man she found hard to predict at times, but at the very least that meant things were rarely boring. She moved to stand a step behind at his elbow when she was beckoned, and she nodded once to acknowledge his instruction. It was a stroke of luck that the guest rooms were far from the servants' quarters, so whatever her lord's plans for how - or if - Rose and Alina would be reunited would be more easily controlled. And, thankfully, there were a few guest rooms that were modest enough to suit the purpose; if Alina was anything like herself, Violet knew she'd feel uncomfortable in a room that was too obviously for high status guests.

She had expected more objection from Alina, but was glad when she accepted as easily as she did. Leave it to a working girl to see reason quickly, Mari thought with an inward smile. "I can go see that the room is prepared immediately," she said, looking at Jenner for confirmation. They would need to make sure Roselin had stayed in her room as she'd been told before they brought Alina through the Nest, and frankly the sooner they got their new guest safely tucked away in her room, the better. Then she could find out from Jenner what their next step would be.

Jenner seemed well pleased, at least outwardly. He had some concerns over the matter of what might or might not be said to Rose, but he didn't betray them. Actually, he was thinking about Alina Sebring. Lily? She had come from the valley, after all. He mused about the mystery of how he had ended up with a Violet and a Rose. She was physically more resembling of a lilac, in his mind, but it didn't roll off the tongue as well.

When he sensed Mari at his shoulder, he snapped back to the present. "One night," he echoed to his guest. "As you say. But no doubt a hearty meal will help you sleep and regain some of your vigor. It would be our pleasure to host you when you have refreshed yourself," he said with a smile. Motioning to his lieutenant, he pulled her even with him. In the meantime, I hope you will find the guest rooms to your liking. Violet will show you to them, and if you require anything, you only need to let her know and she will arrange it.

Turning back to face Mari, Jenner nodded. "I will be in my study composing my missive for the family and merchants of the town. Perhaps while you settle our guest you will take a recent description from her for our benefit," he said casually, even though he pictured the missing woman perfectly in his mind. As he turned back to Alina, he nodded reverently and smiled. "And we will see you at dinner then," he added to the woman as he backed out of the room smartly.

“It will be my pleasure, Lord Pavon,” Alina responded as he left the room. Not only was she going to be sleeping here for the night, but she would be dining with the lord of the house, unworthy as she was to do so. It was hospitality beyond anything she could have hoped for. “Your lord seems like a kind man,” she said to Violet once the man had gone and it was just the two girls once again. She meant that as the best possible sort of compliment, after having seen first hand the outright dismissal given to her by other lords and ladies. If Roselin hadn’t been directly related to the king… some of the nobles would undoubtedly have shown her the door before answering any of her questions.

“I hope… you wouldn’t mind showing me to a place where I might wash up? I fear the road has left me somewhat less than presentable.” It would have been more ideal for her to have stopped at an inn and washed up before intruding upon Lord Pavon, but she had no change of clothes after her one spare dress had gotten a rather significant tear. So really, there was only so much more presentable she could be under the circumstances. Neither Violet nor the lord of the house had seemed to mind that too much so far. Hopefully that good luck would continue. A good scrub, maybe a moment or two to relax, and she would feel much more like her cheerful self again by dinnertime.

Mariana nodded once to affirm that she was at Alina's disposal, and once more at Jenner's instruction to take Rose's description, with a "Yes, my lord," for good measure. She watched him leave, her mind taking a moment to both go through her next moves and hope that Jenner was going to somehow occupy Rose for the time being. Alina's words snapped her back to the here and now, though, and a kind - if somewhat reserved - smile graced her lips. "Yes," she said, although whether she meant that he was or that he simply seemed to be was somewhat ambiguous, "I consider myself quite lucky that I came to be in his service." That, at least, was a genuine truth.

"Of course," Violet replied as she began to walk, gesturing for Alina to follow beside her. It would be faster to get to the room Alina was to occupy going through the back hallways, but Violet's steps took them on a path that would lead through he main castle. Alina was a guest, after all, and Jenner had made clear that she was to be treated as one. That, and these were spaces that Rose would have no reason to be in. For the most part, the staff of Caeli Nidos operated almost entirely out of sight. "Once we're to your room I'll have the girls bring a bath up for you. And, if you don't mind my boldness," she added, sizing Alina up with a glance, "I've a dress that I think would fit you quite well, and we'll have your current clothes laundered while you dine with Lord Pavon."

The dress wasn't actually Violet's, although there was no reason Alina should know that. It came in with a girl who, if she remembered correctly, had arrived a few years ago, and had been kept in the communal closet in Mari's room since then. That it was hanging beside the dress Rose had been wearing when she'd arrived was a particularly amusing coincidence.

A winding walk through the expansive hallways and spaces of Caeli Nidos soon brought them to the guest wing, and Mariana pulled the keyring from where it hung from her belt at her hip and flipped quickly through to find the right key. The door unlocked easily and she opened it wide, gesturing for Alina to enter. It was a modest room from a noble's standpoint, but the plush bedding, comfortable chairs, and large window would be a vast upgrade from what Alina was likely used to.

"I'll have the bath sent up promptly, along with the dress. The girls will collect your current clothes when they retrieve the tub, and everything will be clean and ready for you by tomorrow." Violet spoke with a smile that nevertheless gave the impression that she wouldn't be talked out of any of the hospitality she offered. "If there's nothing else I can do for you, I'll leave you for now." She waited a moment to make sure their guest was set. "Please don't hesitate to call if you have need of me for anything. I'm never far." With a warm smile, Violet bowed and let herself out, latching the door behind her.
