    A Loss She Never Thought She'd Have To Endure - Coralie/Henry - 10/04

It was the early hours of the morning, still dark outside the window, and Cora woke with a pain deep within her belly. The Lady kept screaming to the servants that she worried about her child and all she received in response were looks of concern. She'd been suffering from the plague for some time now and the medicines the healers were giving her did not work.

    Until Henry arrived.

She held her belly as the servants insisted that the young Baptiste was on his way. They fussed about her room getting her fresh water but all Coralie could notice was the intense pain she'd been in. Deep down she could feel what she'd been promised, contractions, but they were too soon.

    Three whole months too soon.

They'd pulled back the sheets and found blood, she could absorb that much information from the women around her. "The baby is on it's way." "Oh no! It's too soon!" "Better lose the baby than the Lady of the house." "What if the Lord dies too?" "We shall cross that bridge when we come to it!" The conversations around her infuriated her but all she could do was scream out in pain. She wanted to throw something, to curse, to swear, but she only had enough energy to worry and scream.

He'd simply jumped on a horse the moment he heard word from house Macari. Henry strapped his medicine bags to the horse days before and had been working out of them as he traveled from city to city. It was mostly the same situation over and over, either they died or the cure saved them, no variation and no surprises. That was until he met the messenger outside the tavern who informed him a premature birth was underway.

Following the messenger back to the house, he recognized the little holding right away. Henry knew he'd been there the day before, the Lord and Lady both had fallen ill and the Lady was with-child. Only five months to this day he'd found out after his examination of the patient. He dismounted as quickly as he could and was greeted with an open door and screams of the expecting mother flowing from beyond.

"Clean water, towels, pillows and a warm fire." He started shouting a list of what the servants needed to gather but they nodded and escorted him inside. "We have already prepared for you m'Lord." Henry's only response was a quick nod as headed down the hall to the Lady's chambers while rolling up his sleeves. The servants opened the door and her screams rang out again, and he winced in response. The door was definitely keeping the whole world from hearing the full pitch of her pain.

"Lady Macari," he addressed her as he sat beside her on the bed and took her hand. "How far separated is her pain?" He asked a servant who gave him a grave look in response. "Immediate?" He asked and received a nod of confirmation. Henry tried to keep the look of worry from his face but he had no time to think about anything other than delivering the baby and hoping it lived.

"Roll down the blankets and get her to the bottom of the bed, center her if you can, this baby is coming."

The door swung open and between ripping cramps, she looked over to see Henry Baptiste standing in the doorway. If she hadn't been in so much pain she was sure she would have felt relief at his presence. Hearing her name spoken by the young man, gently, brought her attention back to the room and it's inhabitants and his touch upon her hand did garner a smile from her lips before her womb contracted again.

He heard him asking the servants questions but she was too busy grunting in pain to really process what was being said. That was, until he said that her baby was to be born today. Quickly one hand moved from her belly to grab at the Baptiste man's sleeve.

"No. No. No." Tears stained her cheeks as she pleaded with him, knowing he had no control, but it was all she could do. "No! It's too soon!" Her lips parted, panting from the stress of her situation, but she was able to look into Henry's eyes even as the next contraction ripped through her belly. "It's too soon."

The man gently touched her hand that gripped at his sleeve. "We will see, Lady Macari, have hope." He moved away from her as soon as more pain caused her to reach for her belly and release him from her grasp.

"Prop her up with pillows." He took command of the room, this was his element and that was obvious, and in any other situation she would admire him for it. "Bring the water over here, clean towels there." He was double checking his sleeves as he pointed around the room and a serving girl delivered him a stool to sit on which he thanked her for.

As calm as he was, she was sure that if there was any hope to be had, she would hedge all her bets with Henry.

The servants were moving Coralie down to the bottom of the bed, it was a good thing she was distracted and she didn't see the sight his eyes fell upon. She'd been laying on the left side of the bed, no doubt to be closer to her chamber pot and bed side table. The entirety of the bed cushion was covered in blood. It had pooled and begun to turn brown, clots lay upon the mattress where the Lady had been as she moved into position to give birth.

Henry looked to a girl who immediately threw a blanket back over the spot. It was good these women had seen childbirth before, the less stress they put Coralie through, the better it would be for the mother. He already anticipated that this would not end well, but even if they were a month off in favor of the baby's due date, the child still had a chance in this world. Another girl had brought him a pot of hot water so he may wash his hands but as they rolled Lady Macari's nightdress up to lay upon her knees and pulled her into position at the bottom of the bed, Henry saw the baby was ready to enter the world already.

"Hold her hands ladies. You, stand here and be ready with towels. You bring the water here and keep it coming." He grabbed the stool and positioned himself at the bottom of the bed, right in front of the Lady of the house. He began assessing the situation as Coralie screamed again. The blood had stopped pouring, even with the baby's crown now on display, that was a good sign.

"Ready?" He was addressing every lady in the room but only Coralie answered verbally, in pain, as the servants nodded. "Coralie." He found that being frank and firm with women during childbirth was the only way to handle the situation. They would undoubtedly swear and call him the worst names he'd been called in his lifetime, but he'd never blame them. He'd seen what childbirth did to women, ripping them apart was a polite way to describe it, and he would never blame them for call him a 'bastard' or tell him to 'go fuck himself'.

    "You need to push."

With assistance from her serving girls, wait one of them was their cook? Coralie moved to the bottom of the bed and felt them packing pillows behind her to prop her up. She was now looking Henry in the eyes, just over her nightdress that had been hiked up past her knees. With the considerable amount of energy she put forth to relocate, she hardly had the energy to scream when the constant pain finally settled in.

"You need to push." His words were true enough but all she could do was shake her head.

"I can't." Her voice was a whimper now. Her cook had her left hand and the stable hand's daughter had her right. For a moment, the situation was clearer for her, half the women here weren't actually her servants. She had only one serving girl, the women here were looking at her with hopeful eyes, they were here for her. They were here because they were hearing her cry out in pain. They were here because they cared.

"You must." Henry was here too, his instruction was clear and she did was she was told. She gripped the women's hands tight and pushed as hard as she could when she was told to do so. Strangely, with all the pain she'd been through, she felt numb. Not really numb, there was still pain for sure, but it felt different and she had no idea how to process it all. The women were cheering her on and she was doing exactly as Henry asked.

When the baby finally emerged, there was no cry. Her sweat was rolling down from her brow into her eyes and the Stable hand's daughter used her free hand to push her hair out of her eyes. "Lady Coralie ..." There was sympathy in the girls voice and she couldn't even find the energy to look up, to see Henry, to see the baby.

Henry had delivered many babies in his time. With and without his mother's guidance. He had seen babies die, suddenly, slowly, nothing shocked him anymore. As far as Coralie's wounds as a result of child birth, he made notes in his head. There was minimal tearing as the child was still under developed. It seems they were correct on the appropriate month of birth for the child. The girl who stood closest to him handed him a blanket and he wrapped the child within it.

The room was silent and one woman whispered to the Lady of the house while pushing her hair out of the way. He pulled Coralie's nightdress down and sat down on the edge of the bed, offering the bundle to the would be mother. Henry watched as the woman slowly sat up, with the assistance of the other women, her face was now mere inches away from his as she examined the bundle.

"It's a girl." It was all he could find to say in the situation. It was as if Coralie didn't understand what had just happened to her and her infant. She stared at the child, swaddled in linen, for just a few more moments until she began to sob. Slowly she took the bundle from him and held her in her arms. She cried over the little one who had been born but would never open it's eyes to see the world.

She would never know her mother's love.

The baby was so light, blankets and all, and Coralie pulled her close to her chest. Silence still, a crackling fire, but no one said a word. There was nothing to be done.

It was all unplanned really, all of this, she never planned to conceive this child. Something had gone wrong and she had found herself with child. It wasn't all that bad, besides how much she disliked the child's father, and she had grown to love the idea of becoming a mother. She would groom her offspring to be the vision of perfection, nothing like her husband, and she was to make her son or daughter a vision to behold.

Now, Henry sat at the bottom of her bed, she was surrounded by silent women who cried for her loss. She looked down to the child wrapped tight, there was no wiggle, no yawns or deep breaths. She was simply still within her mother's arms. Finally, Coralie was able to let out one final cry, her forehead landing on Henry's shoulder.

This was not what she'd ever imagined for herself.
