Waiting on the Love of a Traveling Soldier - 11/15 Morning, Shellten Observatory - Grant/Rubianne/Possibly Aloise

Thomas, as Thomas was wont to do, thought that Grant was being rash. "But sir, you haven't even had word from her grace yet. Don't you think you are putting the cart ahead of the proverbial horse?" The valet made no move beyond his speech however, to stop Grant. Instead, he handed him his canteen, which the lord casually stuffed into one of the saddle bags he was packing. The servant let out a sigh, and shrugged. "And what am I supposed to do until you return, my lord?"

The head of House Hepburn pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and index finger in an attempt to remember the plethora of things he was forgetting. Shaking the frustration free, he nodded at Thomas' words. "Doesn't matter," he assured the valet. "The longer we delay, the more likely Dastan will do something drastic, and I already gave Aloise my word that I would move to free Delphia and Veronica, even without Queen Vivienne's blessing.

Of course, he wasn't setting out right away. Seamus and Bosleigh still had to prepare themselves, and he would have to assemble the riders that escorted the former to Hebron. And he had a few other things to put in order as well. In response to Thomas' final question, Grant nodded. "As a matter of fact, yes. If you could see if Lady Remington is awake, I would like to speak with her," he said.

Thomas nodded and turned, making his way toward Rubianne's chambers. Grant cleared his throat softly, and the valet paused and looked back. "Of course my lord," he said, spinning about and making his way instead to Grant's rooms. They had been up late after returning from the play, and Remington had decided to stay. Or was asked to stay. Or it had been implied she should stay. All of the above would have been true. But as it was, Grant had risen early and was about his day, content to let the woman sleep in. But Rubianne was not the type to linger in bed alone, and she would likely be up and about by this time.

Grant had not yet discussed his pending departure with the woman. That was what he had planned to discuss with her now, even if he was held back by Vivienne for a few days. She and Thomas would be all that remained to care for his holdings here, as he was determined to keep Maera and Satrina from attempting to take over while he was gone. That, and if Gavin remained in the capital, he would need Remington to remind him of his place, should the other two females try to persuade him to squat in the Observatory.

Ruby had woken, cold and wrapped awkwardly in furs, alone in bed again. She rolled her eyes, the gods apparently forbid Grant to wake her up when he left. Heaving a sigh, she had rolled out of bed and cleaned up before throwing on a long black silk dress. It wasn't lady like, not that she cared, but she liked it. The top hugged her body while, at the waistline, it come down in pleats. It swished about her feet pleasantly when she walked, and always went with a good pair of heels. She finished the outfit off with her necklace and bracelet, her new favorite accessories, and fluffed her curls so they laid across her shoulders just right.

All of her dressing for the day was in vein, she knew it, she had no plans to leave the house but only to play with her puppy. Maggie had gone out to do her business, Ruby escorted her and would not allow anyone else to do so, and brought her back inside to play in front of the fire. The pup had begun to learn and was catching on quite quickly. She always stuck to the left of Ruby and never stepped more than a foot away. She was proud of the four legged companion she had and at least it gave her someone to talk to so she didn't go crazy while Grant was occupied elsewhere and in no need of her.

It was when the knock came at the door that Ruby looked up, her brow furrowed, but as she bid them to enter she was greeted by Thomas. His message was clear and she had given him a confident nod before allowing the man to depart. Lord Hepburn wanted to speak with her and she bid Maggie to follow her. Through the halls she could hear the ring of her heels and the jingle of the dog's collar, but nothing else. So quiet.

Finally when the pair came to the Lord's study, she knocked three times and waited for the Lord to grant her entrance into his presence.

Near as he could tell, things were as far in order as they could be until he had a more clear directive. Grant's incessant need to plan for most eventualities was in stark contrast to how he had acted in Rubianne's presence the previous week. If she had taught him nothing else, he could credit her for instilling an unusual amount of impulsiveness into him. Thankfully, he had a three day ride to break himself of that habit. Three days to resume the mantle of commander and lord. The last thing he could afford was for the men to assume he was as willy nilly as he had acted with the Remington woman.

As he buckled the last strap on his bag and pulled it tight, there was a trio of soft knocks at the door. Turning, he gave it a puzzled look before shaking his head. "Enter," he called casually, expecting that perhaps it could be Gavin with word from the queen. He had already moved to the rack on the far end of the wall which contained his personal repertoire of blades. Looking them over, he snapped up the stiletto and the billhook, setting the former into his riding boots and making a note to fit the latter into his saddle. The longsword he turned to toss on the desk, when he spotted Rubianne standing in the doorway.

"My Lady," he said softly, noting how he had let the words fly so easily from his lips. Setting the blade down, he took a few steps towards her and smiled. "Did you sleep well," he asked, genuinely curious. They should both have been sufficiently spent from the prior evening's festivities to insure a restful night, but Grant never tended to speculate. He also never minded hearing that he had done enough to ensure that a woman had slept soundly.

Without waiting for her to answer, Grant closed the distance between them with a few more steps, and put his hand on her cheek to draw her in for what was lengthier than a standard kiss good morning. Drawing back, he did his best to hide a small amount of blush, the most he ever managed to muster. "I hope that Thomas didn't disturb you. There was nothing urgent."

Bending down, Grant rubbed the puppy's neck under the collar and patted her on the head. "And good morning to you as well, Maggie. I know you slept well. Practically made yourself comfortable on my face, didn't you?"

She stepped through the door and closed it behind her, after watching the puppy flop through the doorway. The door latched and she turned to see Grant set down a sword on the surface of his desk. Her eyebrows lifted in question but Grant effectively distracted her. She opened her mouth to answer his question but he crossed the room quickly and placed his lips on hers. She melted into him and closed her eyes tight.

"My Lord." Her voice was more of a sigh when he pulled away, catching her breath. "I slept well, as I know you did too." She gave Grant a wink. "Thomas didn't disturb me at all. What is it that you wanted to discuss?"

She watched as Grant paid attention to Maggie. "We truly should make her a good bed of furs. It is not decent that she sleeps with us, one day she will be too big." When he rose to his feet again she took his hand in her own and kissed the back of it. "I believe it goes without mentioning that your face is where I should be finding comfort, among other things."

Her eyes fell back to the blade on his desk but she decided to keep her opinions to herself until she found the right moment to mention her observation.

Her commentary on how he should have slept was amusing to say the least. Remington was lucky that Grant hadn't fallen asleep in the balcony of the theater. If she would have had to carry him home, it would have served her right. But the man could hardly complain. He had more than gotten even when they returned to the observatory.

Allowing the first question to pass, Grant smiled at Ruby as he pet the dog. "Awww....you're just a little girl, aren't you," he teased the pup as he swatted at her playfully. "Momma says you can't sleep with us anymore, because she gets jealous when I snuggle anyone but her, doesn't she?" The dog wagged its tail happily and slobbered on his hand as he tried to lick it. Grant pushed the scamp away and stood back up to look at the woman. "There's a letter of credit in my desk drawer," he told her with a smile. "It has my seal on it, and it's good for any establishment in the city. Whatever you need, just show it to the shopkeepers and they will make sure you have it."

If he noticed her glancing at the sword, Grant didn't betray the fact. "I find comfort in yours," he said sincerely. There was no hint of innuendo, or anything inappropriate. There was just a look that said he meant the words, and that he didn't know what to do about them. Grant knew that he had to figure it out, and figure it out in the immediate future.

Blinking away the fog for a moment, Grant remembered the other reason he had summoned Rubianne. "There's a list of appointments for next week," he said, handing her a piece of parchment. "None of it is too imperative, but it will give you good experience in how to handle the business. I've also listed the current rates for timber, paper, and maple syrup. They have substantial markup, so if someone feels the need to shake you down, there's room for a discount. Use your best judgment."

He had thus far avoided the matter of his departure. Eventually she would ask, and he would have to tell her. But he wasn't sure what he would say or how she would react. Or how he would feel if she didn't react in a manner similar to how he felt about leaving. Mostly, he was avoiding whatever it was that was wrong with him.

"Sure, make me the bad guy. Just remember this day when she's on the bed, all fours on your spine, pushing you toward the edge." She waved a finger at Grant, hoping that her words would sink in. She was small now, but she would not be soon enough. Maggie looked happy enough that the Hepburn was even paying attention to her, she would be on the floor that night and every night after, and she would be happy there too.

"I'll buy her a few furs then, to start out, and maybe a few for me too." She gave Grant an wink, instigating as always, and insinuating that a shopping spree would undoubtedly follow. "Maybe a new dress while I'm out and shoes to match!" She baited the man who stood before her.

Ruby would have normally waited for the comment he made and countered it with some comment of her own, but this time he seemed to be in an honest mood. An eyebrow raised but she did smile back to him, not intending to be rude, but she was truly wondering what was going on inside his mind.

Grant had moved on quickly and now, as the arched eyebrow fell, her eyes narrowed while he spoke. The scene she and Maggie had walked into had finally started to knit itself together and she locked eyes with the Lord before her as she poked her right forefinger into his chest. "Because you'll be where?" She asked, direct and to the point.

"Somebody always has to be the bad guy, my love. Is it not enough that I am ruthless politician and businessman? Can I not be the good guy even once in a while," he asked with a tone of mock pleading. "As for her pushing on my spine with all fours, well, I have a very cunning plan to deal with that. You see, I simply put her on the outside, and then she pushes me closer to you," he told her with a smile, quite proud of himself. "Then everybody wins, no?"

Her intentions on spending his money didn't really bother him. Grant had more than he could likely ever spend, and his heirs were backed by Hallward capital from Stone Forge. If she filled the building with furs, there would still be funds to spare. "And will these furs be the kind that we can lay down in front of the fire," he asked her reaching out to take one of her hands again. "Because in that case, Miss Maggie can have the bed all to herself," he told her, nuzzling his cheek to hers and kissing her lightly.

The question about his intentions was one he had been expecting ever since she had spied his sword on the desk and been invited to join him. He had played through his mind a few different options for how he would explain his plans to her, but none of them had ever really sounded right in his mind. As he did with most things, Grant decided he would just shoot from the hip. "Seamus, Bosleigh, and I are taking a little hunting trip," he said, pretending to be coy. "Perhaps a couple weeks, no longer. But, while I'm away, it should just be you and Thomas and Aloise here in the Observatory. I am sure you three ladies will find plenty of ways to entertain yourselves," he assured her with a smile at his steward's expense.

And of course, there was the matter of the business she would have to look over. "If you host any potential bidders or colleagues, don't be afraid to invite Thomas to sit in. He has a good read of people, and can smell a liar from a mile off. I wouldn't take his counsel on matters of money, but if you find yourself questioning someone's intentions, he can more than likely steer you in the right direction."

"You need an excuse to crowd me out of the bed then?" She pretended to act offended but couldn't hold the face she was making. She laughed and shook her head in response to her own theatrical failure. "I am content with being the 'bad guy' since I don't need to be sharing the bed with more than one body." She planted a kiss playfully on Grant's cheek.

At the idea of curling up before the fire, wrapped in Grant's embrace, Ruby purred. "Great idea." She received his kiss, delicate upon her lips, and it still amazed her at how easily he took her breath away with such a small gesture. The fact that he didn't argue about her spending his money on frivolous things made her laugh internally but she didn't say a word to him on the matter.

Ruby pushed a finger into Grant's chest, forcing him to take a step back and look her in the eyes. "A ... hunting trip?" Her eyebrows were raised and her free hand landed on her hip. "Do you think I'm drunk? What exactly are you doing Grant Hepburn? And don't you lie to me, understand?" His coy act while he gave her outright fibs didn't exactly make her angry but it was quite annoying to her.

"I will do all that I can to further the success of your family." She made sure to bring attention to the fact that she was separating herself from him, at the current time, but continued on with a clear warning. "I however will not stand for your deception. Not to me."

"An excuse," he asked with some thought. "I don't know. Here in Hebron, it's relatively mild. In the heart of Maple Glade, the nights get awfully cold my love. And I try not to bring this up, but your family does have a reputation for trying to usurp their betters. How do I know you won't steal all of the covers?" Grant accepted the kiss on the cheek with a laugh, and shook his head. "You don't have to be the bad guy. If this is what you decide is best for your pup, then I would never contradict you." Looking down at the mastiff, Grant shrugged. "Sorry girl. Your momma is the boss."

The pup didn't seem to mind, or understand, and just bounded away happily after a small ball that Grant tapped across the floor with his toe. "I'm full of great ideas," he said, reaching about her and pinching her bottom lightly. He pulled away for the moment, and smiled as he saw the wheels working in her head. Whatever she was thinking, it made her smile, and that was enough for Hepburn.

Backpedaling, as Ruby had already witnessed, was Grant's specialty and put his hands up in a look of defensiveness. He wanted to ask if his money was being invested in the painted nails that were jabbing into his torso, but he didn't. "Drunk?" In fact, Grant didn't think she was drunk. But he quickly began imagining it. For all of their adventuring this week, he had never seen the woman intoxicated.

Grant knew that it was not entirely untrue. It was a hunting trip. But instead of deer or elk, they'd be chasing De Angelis soldiers. But clearly the metaphor was not going to fly for Remington. "We're going to Welch Run, to retrieve Aloise's sister and cousin," he said dryly. "I expect it to be at Queen Vivienne's direction. But if it isn't," he said, letting the thought to trail off. If it was going to be treason, he wasn't going to say it out loud.

"I know you will do your best, my love. I have faith in you." But that wasn't really the point. "And I want you to know that I wouldn't lie to you, Ruby. But sometimes the less you know, the safer you are."

She pursed her lips at Grant while he teased at her family's habits. "I'll steal the covers and I'll end up on top, and you won't complain about it for even a minute." Her smile reflected exactly what she meant and she closed the distance between them, pressing herself against the Lord before her. As he looked down to Maggie and apologized, Ruby laughed, entertained by the way their conversations always took strange turns. If anyone ever listened in, they would think the pair were insane.

As Maggie hopped away, after the ball that rolled across the floor, the Remington girl received her pinch and answered with a small squeak. "You're full of something else too." She teased. He stepped back and she felt the absence of his body heat. Groaning internally, she was well aware how hard it would be to sleep with him gone for days on end.

Grant came out with the real intentions for their trip and Ruby could feel her heart drop into her stomach. "I think the more I know will be the best for you, actually." She could feel her cheeks turning red. "You need to stop with this foolish notion that hiding information from me will keep me better off. You have to know that information keeps us safe, or why would you have spies?" She lifted her eyebrows in question. "You know that if you make a move, I will be questioned too, no matter what I know or what I do not. Let me advise you, for in the end that is why I'm here? Am I not?" She didn't even wait for an answer before she continued.

"Vivienne is Queen now and she's going to need to pave a path for herself and I KNOW that you know this. She will not HESITATE to make an example out of you if that is what she needs to do. Do not do this, it's foolish, if you do not have her stamped letter in your hand, which I do not see it on your desk, do not move forward with this plan."

She stepped forward, quickly, and grabbed the front of Grant's shirt. "Please, do not leave before Vivienne sends her army to assist you. It is unwise, unhealthy, and would upset me more than you can ever imagine."

Ruby decided to leave out the fact that she would have a nervous breakdown if she had to sit in her room and imagine what was happening. It was bad enough she'd have to panic over whether or not he'd return in one piece, let alone if he'd be heading straight to the dungeons upon his return.

"Grant, please don't do anything foolish." Her voice wasn't much more than a whisper as she plead with him to do the wise thing.

The way Rubianne spoke, it was hard to believe that Durand had let her go. What could possibly have been lacking in their relationship that he would have been better off without her? Grant was at a loss to think of any man who wouldn't hear her flirtations, and see the way she delivered on them, and want to not have her all of the time. Perhaps he needed to find out what it was that Guy knew that he didn't. Not that he cared, given his own experiences. "You are welcome to anything I have, including the blankets," he told her warmly. "As long as you are near, I could never be cold."

Grant chuckled at her inference, but didn't deny it. "Possibly. And here Old Lady Lallersby probably thought that she had beaten it all out of me. But alas, it's probably as you say."

It was immediately clear that Rubianne was not the docile girl that she pretended to be in public, or even once might have been in private. It made Grant smile to see her more assertive, even if it was counter to his position. "You think I am trying to protect you?" He scoffed for a moment and shook his head. "Against persecution, physical harm, or a nasty word, I would defend you until the death, Lady Remington. But not only would I never protect you from being my accomplice, quite to the contrary, I'd be counting on it. And you are correct, I did bring you hear for your counsel. If I didn't want it, or didn't care about it, I would not have alerted you that I was even leaving." Though he could picture dealing with her when he returned, had that been the case. If she had even bothered to stay.

Grant could feel his cheeks turning his lips into a scowl, and didn't bother to try and hide it. "Oh, my dear Rubianne. I so admire your loyalty. But let me explain something to you. Not to be cold or cruel, or even conceited. Let me simply enlighten you to the facts of the matter." He turned to face her and set his hands upon his desk. "Queen Vivienne is gracious and wise. I knew it from the moment she stepped into the council chamber the night of her coronation. She is pragmatic, personable, and aware of her own precarious position. She won't make an example out of me. De Angelis' crimes are going to come to light. And if she were foolish enough to imprison or behead one of the lords of the four high houses within a fortnight of her coronation, for attempting to punish an usurper and rapist, she would find the island in open rebellion."

Sighing, Grant pushed himself off the desk. "I know she is your friend, Ruby. And to be honest, I am slightly fond of her myself. But there's a little girl down the hall whose entire family has been murdered. And I know that if anyone can sympathize with her, it's you. The only problem is, her William and Callie are still trapped in the clutches of the murderers. So what do you want me to do? What would you expect me to do, if it was your family?"

Moving around the desk, Grant took the ball from the puppy's jaw and sat upon the corner of his desk while the little dog waited for him to throw it again. "I don't want you to pick a side on this, my love. But I would appreciate it if you would consider the position Vivienne is putting me in, rather than the one I am putting her in."

Looking out the window, Grant noticed that it was still not noon. "I'm planning to depart in two days. This is the world of politics, Ruby. If you want to be a part of it, if you want to help me and Vivienne, then perhaps you should consider how to make her see the right of it. Perhaps..." Grant paused and frowned, knowing that what he was about to say was probably going to cause a problem. "Perhaps you should make the Knight of Autumn see the right of it."

His manner of speaking had become more endearing by the day. He had started to call her his 'love' on a regular basis and she had a deep-seated fear that if she returned the affection verbally that he would recant his, or that he would expel her from his life entirely. A fear based on past experiences? How she had been treated in her younger years? Expressing feelings always drove them away.

    Always.

"It probably is." She teased. He was an outlandish story teller on some days, but she enjoyed every moment. Even though she detested his big fish tales when she needed the truth from him, she was learning to see to the heart of the matter. It was a skill that she would find useful in the days to come, unbeknownst to her.

"I can appreciate your summoning me." She stood upright, as tall as she could, and let her hands fall to her side. Pleading for him to see reason was not going to work and she waited until he was completely finished talking before she allowed herself to respond. Her anxiety about the situation was telling her to just nod, accept his judgement as he was the Lord and she was nothing, but her heart and soul burned hotter than ever.

It was with a deep breath that she cast away the knowledge that he was displeased with her response and the scowl that he wore to reflect that. "I believe I was pleading to you not to loose your head in this matter, both literally and metaphorically speaking. Let me explain something to you." The distance between them was notable and she was done pleading with him to see reason. It would now be facts she would deliver to him, nothing more and nothing less.

"Treason is treason and the Queen will stand you up next to the De Angelis' in a heartbeat if she needs to. She is gracious and wise. She is also, again, trying to carve her own path in this world. To show that she can be just as strong as any man who would argue her claim. My family was cut down in the dead of night, if they weren't defeated in the battle itself they were hunted down and exterminated. We were not a lesser house, the name Remington was spoken differently before ... The incident."

"I am offended that you feel as though my loyalty lies simply with the Queen. Truly to my core, it hurts. I do love her, as if she were my sister, but I care for you deeply and differently." The gods! She said it! "I have considered all of this since the day you had the meeting with her, make no mistake it has weighed heavy on my mind. I have chosen a side, I live here!" She looked around the room dramatically to make a point. "I left the Queen and I ended up here. That is choosing, Grant. I could have gone back, she has offered, I respectfully declined. Side. Chosen."

"My heart aches for that girl." She pointed toward the door as if she were standing right behind her. "I do know how she feels, to a degree, I have not witness the atrocities she has. But answer this, what good am I to her? After I have watched the closest person I have left, slipped through the hangman's noose, Gods for bid it, what good will I be? I am no one, very literally, Grant. I will be no one." Well ... Go for broke Rubianne. "I will be of no use for her and maybe some other willing family will take her in but I will be lost. And do you want her to be the reason a prominent family looses their head of house? I can attest to how long rumors linger, the poor girl would be followed by a shadow, she doesn't need more to carry!"

"You'd be better off sending Gavin to plead with The Knight of Autumn, he never had time for me when I was his, he sure as feck won't find time for me now! The world of politics be damned. I want you here, with me, and not tried for treason. I have no idea what I can get done in two days but you better pray to the Gods it's a lot." She threw her hands up in the air, allowing them to fall to her side with some force, attempting to illustrate how exasperated she was with the situation at hand.

How in the Hell was she supposed to talk to Guy or Vivienne for that matter!? She would have to summon every ounce of pride and courage or hopefully the ball was already rolling and Vivienne already planned to be ready for this in just a few day's time.

She didn't realize how upset she had gotten over the matter, sweating and quite near to tears, she shook her head and turned to leave. If Maggie didn't follow her, at least she knew she was in good hands, she couldn't handle this. Rubianne knew the outcome of his actions, if he indeed moved without the Queen's command, would be treason. He had his reasons, good ones, but the road to Hell was paved with them.

Grant was not entirely sure just how much the woman really appreciated the matter. After all, she was clearly less than pleased. It was clear immediately from her position that she was not Thomas. Thomas would likely have had a similar argument, and then let it go, as Grant was his superior. But despite the way their business relationship had begun, it was clear that Rubianne was now more invested than when she walked in the door, and she simply wasn't going to lie down to his will on this.

Her tone was harder than it had been. Less emotional, more practical. At least as far as she rationalized the argument. Her treatise on treason were clear, and if Vivienne had been queen for any more than three days, then he might have had cause to heed her. But that was not the case. "The queen needs to solidify her position. The queen, needs the high houses. Bradyn Hallward would march on Hebron in the blink of an eye if Vivienne had me executed. Cailen was king for nearly two years and he sat idly by while De Angelis slaughtered a noble house. Vivienne is not going to challenge me in the first week when I am on the side of right."

All of this was of course moot, as Grant well knew. He was only waiting on Larson and Gavin to have their men assembled. "You needn't be offended," he told her. "None was meant." Her next words made a smile form on his lips, and he shook his head slowly. "I care for you too, Ruby. More than what propriety would deem appropriate after such a very short time. And I am truly blessed that you have decided to live with me. But you have to understand, that I am a man who very much needs to be able to live with himself. How do I live with myself, if I put myself above the welfare of those I have sworn to protect?"

Grant had given serious thought in the last couple of days about life with Rubianne Remington. He had begun to work through the scenarios in which he would tell Maera and Satrina and Delaney. But he had also begun to imagine a Maple Glade with Aloise, and the future he could give her as well. He looked at her with a sympathetic eye. "Oh love, is that what you think? That without me, without this," he spun in a circle to imply he meant their surroundings. "That you would be nothing? Capable of nothing? If you think I believe that, then you really do count me for a fool." There was a small laugh, an odd sound, as though something helpless. Even though Grant Hepburn was anything but helpless.

Closing the distance between them a little, the man raised his hand and brushed a loose strand of hair over her ear with his thumb. "In the desk, under the writs of property I have already mentioned, is a contract for marriage. I had Karenna Caldoran draw it up yesterday morning, and I have already signed it. If anything were to happen to me, you would only need to affix your name to it. Neither Satrina, nor Maera, nor even Vivienne herself would be able to freeze you out. You would take Aloise with you to Maple Glade, and Delaney would give you all the time and comfort you need." It was a reckless plan, by all estimations. Even without it, Delaney would have taken in Aloise, and Vivienne would have put Ruby back in the castle. But it had also been meant to test the girl's feelings, which was no longer necessary.

The man didn't press the matter of Guy Durand. "You're right. It's not your place. It was a ridiculous thing for me to ask you, and I am sorry. Neither should you try to influence her grace. This is her first test, and she needs to come to it on her own. But if it makes your mind more at ease, then I will make you a deal. If I have no word from her in two days, then will depart ahead of her forces, and I will give you an extra two days to plead my case. It will take me three to arrive, and that way we have a day to compensate for delays. Is that fair?"

As Grant mentioned the facts he believed to be true, Ruby did all she could not to shake her head. Bradyn Hallward march against the Queen if Grant were hung for treason? How many of her Uncle's men actually defended him when it came down to the heart of the matter? That Cailen intended for the house of Peregrine to be cut down and did nothing? It was absurd and these accusations and threats would place Grant in hot water.

"How better to reach the pinnacle of power than over the corpses of your enemies?" Rubianne didn't flinch, simply pursed her lips before continuing. "As, if you commit treason, that is what you will be."

She'd turned to leave the room, needing peace from the insanity that was Grant, but he kept talking. She couldn't will herself to continue her retreat, instead, she slowly turned around and bit her bottom lip. What more was she to say? He wasn't going to listen, she only knew Vivienne on a personal level. Hell, what was the point of her being employed as his confidant on these matters if he refused to listen.

Citing his pride as his major motivator, she rolled her eyes. He'd just finished saying he cared for her more than "propriety would deem appropriate" blah blah blah. She didn't speak up to correct Grant when he misinterpreted her attempt at hinting toward her affection for him, but at the rate they were going he wouldn't listen to that either. She simply continued to chew upon the flesh of her mouth, keeping her lips pressed together in a thin line while breathing heavily through her nose. It was her last-ditch effort to calm her temper.

He stepped forward and pushed a bit of hair behind her ear. She was so angry with him that she didn't even feel the impulse to bury her face in his palm. Instead she made eye contact with him and attempted to remain expressionless as he continued to speak of his plans. He mentioned the marriage contract and she could feel her face go red but she only allowed herself to blink in response. Inside her mind was racing and she waited, waited for him to finish apologizing and giving her what he called a fair agreement.

She stepped closer to him, so close she could almost touch her nose to him with so little effort. An aggressive stance and she was aware, but she would let him know that she was her own woman before this conversation was over. "You misunderstand me, Lord Hepburn. Entirely. So I shall explain myself better, do excuse my ineloquent tongue. I am well aware of my vanity, though I do not need to live in a castle. I was well and ready to work in a tavern, though do not forget my hair would always be quiet excellent as I did so. I do not care about the walls around us, they're not even yours anyway! I don't need the protection of your money, your family, your name. I simply want you. And I'll be damned if I sign on that line unless you're standing in front of me, watching me do so."

Her ears and cheeks were burning hotter than ever. "If you don't come back to me, Grant Hepburn, I'll burn that damn contract." She didn't even skip a beat before answering his final question. "You have a deal, on one condition, you hire a new adviser. Someone who can put up with your shit."

It was all Grant could do to keep from laughing at this point. The whole absurdity of the conversation was beyond the scope of reason and he wasn't actually sure he could keep it up much longer. Rubianne may well be biased in favor of her friend and her former beau, but that didn't change the nature of Tuneric. "Are you insinuating that myself or my brother in law, are as foolish as Dexter Remington? Oh the things you will learn. Your relatives made a grave mistake, and insisted on trying to take down the Shelltens in the field. They came with siege weapons and men and arrows. But Hebron is deceptive. You think it's on flat land, with no natural barriers. That the walls are not so high."

Hepburn sighed and shrugged. "No, make no mistake Rubianne. Vivienne would not survive an attack from Stone Forge and Maple Glade. Or from Eaton and Huntstown. Aramis Shellten built his personal alliances very carefully. And kept his throne by keeping the four high houses happy. The problem with being the most powerful person in the world, is that it's expensive. It costs property, and gold, and often your scruples. Which is why the high houses are so strong. Their money is their own, and hers is everyone else's. It makes paying bribes to guardsmen and soldiers all the more easier for us."

He hadn't really wanted to dive into the seedier points of the political realm. And he needed to step away from it as quickly as possible. "But it matters not. I am the queen's man. Loyal and true. If I wasn't, do you think I would let her best friend into my bed? When I might talk in my sleep?" His eyes got big, as if in shock. As if he had only suddenly considered that he might talk in his sleep.

Grant didn't misunderstand her. He knew her mind almost perfectly. But he let her go on regardless, because he loved the passion in her. He allowed her to denounce all that he had just offered her. He let her make he threats and her demands. When she finished, he shook his head. "No deal. First, I haven't met anyone who would put up with my shit. Second, why would I take the advice of anyone who was less invested in me than you were."

Leaning back, he put his bottom back on the desk, and the puppy, sensing that Ruby wasn't yet leaving, came running back in to see if Grant had her ball. The man folded his arms over his chest and looked at her comfortingly. "I'm coming back, my love. Vivienne is sending Gavin and Larson Caldoran with me, and I'll have my brothers. A dozen royal infantry and two dozen hobelars. And Dastan doesn't know we're coming. I should be back in a week."

Motioning to the desk again, he smiled. "I had the contract written up for when I return. I figured that a week would be sufficient for you to read it over and decide if you wanted to be Lady Hepburn."

She ignored every comment he made as he touched on her family's mistakes and anything that had to do with the Crown. She was done with this conversation, He couldn't see reason, or he wouldn't as he was convinced he was right. She could understand his point of view, no Vivienne would not want to go to war with other families. She also couldn't afford to have it be common knowledge that the Hepburn Lord walked all over her and executed orders without her permission. It wouldn't go well.

"Let me into your bed!?" She scoffed at his comment. She watched his eyes grow wide and shook her head. He was such a fool at times, and he was back to trying to charm his way around the room. She would admit, she had a weakness and it was his charm. He noted that no one would put up with his shit and she laughed. At the mention of someone who would be invested, Ruby looked up and allowed herself to make eye contact even though she folded her arms to show she was still not impressed with him.

The fact that he would have a small army, Larson included, settled her nerves. She shifted her weight from one leg to the other as she attempted to wrap her head around the time frame he gave her. "One week." Ruby spoke firmly, "that's all I will allow," finally allowing a weak smile to lift her cheeks.

Finally, she decided to appropriately address the fact he was still discussing marriage. "This sounds more like a business deal than a proposal of marriage." Ruby stepped forward but didn't unfold her arms.

Perhaps the statement was assuming, or possibly even a little conceited. After all, it wasn't like there was any hard negotiations in their coupling. He hadn't had to coax her, that much was true, but it wasn't as though he had given any resistance to her intimacies. But that didn't mean that Grant was going to stop his antics. "Fine," he told her dramatically. "Maggie and I let you into our bed. Better?" There was a smile on his face, and he hoped it would diffuse some of her remaining anxiety and anger.

"If I'm any longer than that, it is only because I have to chase Bosleigh out of brothels along the way," he assured her playfully. "Besides, I plan on letting Seamus and the Knights of Dawn do the heavy lifting anyway. I try to save my battles for moments like this." It had been more than a week since they had argued on this level, but then again, only she was really arguing. Grant had known Vivienne's plans before Rubianne had even arrived.

Her comment about a business deal made Grant chuckle, and he almost snorted as he tried to compose himself. "Well, I mean, there's a list of your contractual obligations, of course. Basic legal stipulations for number of heirs, proposed frequency of sexual encounters, recommended spending allowances, provisions for custody of Maggie, if you decide to leave me. All the usual rhetoric," he told her with a shrug. "Loving me is not required, but would make the ordeal more pleasant for both of us."

This was rather quick, all of it. But he would be foolish to continue with their current arrangement without her knowing his intentions. He didn't want her to leave. Ever. And he certainly didn't want her to be of the opinion that he was just using her. It would be unfortunate if it turned out that he had misread her, and she was just in this for the carnal encounters, but that would hardly drive him from the bed chamber. "If you would rather an extended engagement, for the purposes of societal propriety, I wouldn't object. A formal courtship doesn't frighten me. And of course, I wouldn't do anything before William returns."

When he amended his statement to include Maggie, Rubianne let out a laugh. She would never be able to shake him of his absurd behavior, this much she knew, but she did find him just a little funny. At least she had that. "Better." She rolled her eyes to express her annoyance with the whole conversation.

"Bosleigh should probably keep his hands to himself over there. Only the Gods know where those women have been." She shook her head before continuing, "no extensions. One week firm." Ruby was trying to disguise the fact that she was panicking inside. No, he may not put himself in the middle of the fray, but he will still be there and while she didn't doubt him she had her fears.

Ruby had to use all her remaining energy to keep her mouth from hanging open in awe. "All the jokes, Grant Hepburn. Would it kill you to be a bit romantic? Just once?" Her look was one of disbelief, arms still folded, she stood about a foot away from the Lord.

"Let's be honest with ourselves, you will not get custody of Maggie, don't bother trying." The dog was sitting, tail dusting the floor, panting, and watching Grant intently.

He reminded her that William was returning soon and she got butterflies. "You won't be doing anything until you figure out how to do it correctly." She put the challenge on the table and waited for Grant to rise to the occasion.

When Rubianne acquiesced, however tongue in cheek, Grant looked down to the pup and nodded his head. "I told you I would get you back into the bed, didn't I? If only mommy trusted me as much as you do, huh?" The puppy sprang off of its back paws and placed his front two on Grant's leg. The man scratched the pooch's head for a moment and then tapped her away back in Ruby's direction.

In response to her question about where the mistresses of the countryside had been, the man waived his hand at her. "If they are on the road between someplace and someplace else, odds are that Bosleigh has already bedded them, if they are willing to take coin from him." But that didn't matter to Grant. Everyone needed to make a living, and Bosleigh's particular merchant of choice was no different.

Her insistence to his original timetable made him frown. But he shrugged and let it go. "One week then," he said with a nod. "But if the men complain that I whipped them too hard to get home, I'll be sure to let them know that it is all your fault." He was smiling, though he knew there would be some stragglers. He could easily leave the bachelors to linger in the countryside with Leigh if they wanted. He would make haste back to Hebron to report his victory to the queen anyway.

Would it kill him? Grant had to think on that. "I don't know," he finally said dryly. "But if it does, this is going to be the shortest engagement in history." He gave her a look that said the matter of the puppy was not settled, but he didn't comment further on it. Instead, he flexed his right leg before lowering himself to one knee in front of the woman. Reaching out, he took the slender fingers of her hand into his own and looked up into her pretty face.

Squeezing the hand a little tighter, Grant swallowed. "Rubianne Remington?"

Pulling, Grant brought the woman closer and wrapped his arm around the back of her legs. Lifting as he leaned into her, he was soon back on his feet, with the helpless woman over his shoulder. As he spun her around playfully, Maggie jumped and barked in delight. "Well, love? What's it gonna be? Are you going to agree to marry me, or am I gonna have to spin you until you and your breakfast become reacquainted?" As if to emphasize that he meant business, he patted her bottom through her skirts, as he continued to twirl about the room.

He repeated the deal, one week, and she held up a single index finger to confirm her allowance non-verbally. She would not know what to do if it took longer than that for him to return. Ruby could only imagine she'd be ripping her own hair out over that time. She would have some company, and that was not her worry, she knew the fear that would live in the back of her mind and the pit of her stomach.

Ruby watched Grant lower himself to one knee and allowed him to take her hand into his while her other hand fell to her side. She nodded when he spoke her name but the silence in the room was short lived. He pulled her forward and she let out a squeak of surprise. In a split second she found herself hoisted over his shoulder and spinning in circles, Maggie was doing her best to yip at the commotion. He began to spank her lightly, and the room began to melt into one blur that was colored by the furniture and the fire.

"Gods dammit, Grant Hepburn, put me down!" She was slapping his back, and she was sure it wasn't bothering him a bit. "I will! Now put me down!" She clapped her hand over her mouth and held it there as tight as she could while she tried to breathe deeply through her nose.
