Current Location: Kirkland - Tranquil Keep & Castle Farm
    House: Metcalfe
    Crest Appearance:

    House Description/History:
A rival to the farmlands of House Fairfax, the Metcalfe clan has always been a bitter step behind. Duncan Metcalfe's was said to have gained his fortune by hard work and the grace of Yuscat, when in reality he likely acquired his lands through the cunning use of flags, or treachery during the Mink Asa fiasco. Some say he murdered the true born Metcalfe, before taking his name and lands, others suggest he was simply a long last son who took his father's inheritance. No one can truly say, but whatever the truth, the curse that such rumors have brought down on the family has stuck.

Regardless of a turbulent start, Duncan Metcalfe gained riches with his livestock and farming. Several small markets were created to sell his wares and gather those from distant lands. The markets turned to small towns, gathering as many peasants and they could who in turn looked to the Lord for work. By the time that Duncan's sons were grown, and the old man near death, their earnings had multiplied by the tens. Thurstan Metcalfe I took over for his father at the old man's passing, which caused a bitter feud between brothers. Angered by his brother's narcissism, Tallen Metcalfe left Castle Farm and ventured East to settle on the lakefront where he built a castle for himself and named it Tranquil Keep. Eventually the brothers settled their differences enough for Tallen to give his son the brother's name, though some say he did it for quite a lump sum.

The Metcalfe clan began to multiply and continued to thrive in their seat at Kirkland. Generations passed and they saw themselves sinking further and further under the Fairfax household. Bitterness grew more so and the Metcalfes began to keep to themselves more and more.

Castle Claim: Chateau De Chillon & Askerton Castle

    Played By/Face Claim: Richard Armitage

Appearance: Thurstan stands at about 6'2" with a threatening, overbearing stature. His black hair varies in length by the time of year, but often can be found nearly shoulder length and in permanent disarray. Crystal pale blue/green eyes are striking and intimidating, always shadowed by furrowed brows and crows feet at the corners of his eyes. They certainly did not form because of his smile, for he rarely showed his teeth in public or private gatherings - simply put the man never smiles. He is always finely dressed, in doublets, white puffed sleeve shirts, and or vests, with black or gray trousers that look very well pressed. When not in the presence of other nobles, he prefers dark leather. He uses an onyx walking cane to help support the limp in his right leg.

Personality: Thurstan is a shell of a man - pitiful, unhappy, and angry. He is gruff and very hard to talk to, though he enjoys political discussions now and then with those who can handle it. He rarely smiles. As a man quite addicted to work, he rarely takes a moment away from his books and records, and even goes so far to wander the countryside to see that work is being well done. He cares a deal about the workers and peasants under him and his doors are always open to their troubles. But his anger works against him in most cases, and only a few peasants have known his kindness firsthand.

Personal History: Born to Duncan and Juliet Metcalfe, Thurstan grew up under the shadow of a great house. His father, while a good man, was an absolute mess. One the days he was not self medicating with poppy milk, he was a true role model who taught Thurstan, starting at the age of 5, how the household was managed. At that age before social distinctions meant anything to Thurstan, he had been known to sneak out and help the commoners in the field, herding livestock and tending the farm. But that lessened over the years due to the lashings he would receive when found out. When Thurstan turned 22 his father passed away leaving him as head of the household. The family and farms continued to prosper until Thurstan reached his late 20s. A severe drought overcame the region and caused a good bit of starvation among his workers and their families. Behind the scenes, he was trying desperately to gather food for them, going so far as to order grains from the Fairfax and Remington families, leaving him a good deal in their debt. But he was not quick enough, a revolt had started. Advanced word allowed for Thurstan to send word to the King for protection. They arrived promptly to break up the revolt but did not stop Thurstan from injury for he took an unfortunate stray arrow to the knee. It took months for the wound to improperly heal and he never quite gained his full range of motion back. Though a bitterness settled upon him, it was more directed at the complications of life rather than the peasants themselves; he never fully blamed them for the mess. A few farms lay abandoned due to the deaths, some workers moved on, and Thurstan lost about 20% of his field workers and herders within the coming month of the revolt.

He is still attempting to recover and pay back the debts he owes, though his farms are once again mostly prosperous. He took up residence mainly at Castle Farm, leaving the lakefront to his mother and sickly, deformed female cousins, Cecil and Anne.

Writing Sample: "Grytners? What the hells do they want?" Thurstan growled as he snatched the rolled parchment from his steward's hand. Crystal eyes watched the man for a brief moment as his hands worked at the string that bound the papers together.

"The gardens you requested, My Lord, I am sure," Thomas replied quietly before stepping back from the grand mahogany desk.

The features on Thurstan's face softened as his eyes scanned the letter, but the gruffness never lost it's place. With an exhale, Thurstan tossed the paper on the desk and brought a hand to his forehead where his fingers massaged roughly to try and eradicate the headache that had popped up.

"It must have slipped my mind," the Metcalfe Lord offered before pushing back from his chair. He paced briefly, his leather soles creating heavy footfalls that echoed among the stone room. The gardens had been intended for his cousin's at Tranquil Keep, but now he was not sure if there were crowns for them. He stopped his pacing at the window where his gaze traveled across the landscape to the barely visible waterfront castle. Though his countenance looked controlled, an annoyance was burning a hole through Thurstan's chest as he began, "Lady Gyrtner will be arriving soon. I would hate the break the news that I cannot pay her," with his sentence nearly ending in a shout as he slammed a fist down on the stonework window pane. He had learned in the past to slow the movement right before contact though, for another broken finger was not likely to calm him down.

A moment of heavy silence filled the room, causing Thurstan's ear to ring. Finally, he said, "Prepare the guest rooms for the Gyrtner."

Please check your family tree. There are 2 Dustin Metcalfe's that are both dead and were both born in 160? Also, Danielle Metcalfe's husband wouldn't have any political reason to take the Metcalfe name since there is still a remaining Metcalfe heir. Might I suggest to change it to "Daniel Metcalfe + whatever woman", and mark them both dead since the last sentence in history states: "...leaving the lakefront to his mother and sickly, deformed female cousins, Cecil and Anne." No Auntie is mentioned in there. Let me know once complete. Thanks!

Ah! I see the last part - I had that in there because she married her uncle, hence the deformed children So Danielle Metcalfe married her uncle Dustin Metcalfe Which, for the record, wasn't uncommon
