    Mora's Guidebook to Getting Started

    Welcome to Dawn of Empires!

We’re happy to have you here in our little corner of the Internet!

So, maybe you’ve poked around a little bit and you’re thinking of joining but you’ve not sure how to go about it? No problem. Below are some steps to help walk you through that process. There are choices/links, some of them in quote bubbles, that will take you to different places based on the approach that fits you.

Before you go any further, we ask that you read the rules.

First things first, do you understand the setting?
Dawn of Empires is a play-by-post RPG set on the fictional world of Poltarus; in terms of real world comparisons it is similar in some ways to a medieval European setting, but with its own Pantheon and holidays (to learn more about the religion click here). There are no mythical creatures (ex. vampires, werewolves).

There are three Kingdoms currently in play:
    • The Kingdom of Tuneric
    • The Kingdom of Balfour
    • The Kingdom of Esquibel

Tuneric and Balfour share a Pantheon, but each of the three kingdoms has a different culture, society, and general feel.

    Tell me more about Tuneric.
    Tell me more about Balfour.
    Tell me more about Esquibel.

Let’s start with what you would like to play.
What kind of character would you most enjoy playing?

Here are some kinds of characters that you could play in our world (this is not a complete list - please feel free to PM any staffer if you have a question):

    • Nobles: Any member of a governing house is considered nobility. These individuals usually attend or host festivities such as weddings, balls, galas, tournaments, or to open diplomatic relations between other houses. (You can also play a lesser noble - one who governs a smaller tract of land and pays fealty to one of the Lords.)
    • Knights/Dames: Knights are at the core of medieval legend and serve as protectors of the realm; Dames are their better halves. It is not uncommon for a Dame to serve as a lady-in-waiting to the Lady of the house, especially if her husband is employed by the lord of the house. (There are different Orders available; to learn more about the Orders specific to Tuneric, click here.)
    • Priests/Priestesses: For more information consult the thread on religion.
    • Explorers: Those who want to sail the great seas in search of new lands.
    • Teachers/Tutors: Instructors that usually work privately for noble families. (Can also be NPCs)
    • Healers/Physicians: These individuals may be privately employed in a noble's house or have their own place of work. (Can also be NPCS)
    • Servants/Retainers: From steward to kitchen staff, characters in service to the nobility are available for play. However, the game has a greater focus on the nobility, therefore you are encouraged to find a House that would welcome the interaction before making a servant character.
    • Sailors: The Kingdoms are made up of islands; there are many coastal cities and maritime houses.
    • Merchants/Traders: These business people help drive the economies of many cities.
    • Minstrels/Entertainers/Artists: There are plenty of noble families who might serve as patrons for the arts. Who doesn't like entertainment?

Do you have muse for something specific? Did you take a few minutes? What say you?

    No clue yet? No problem.
There are a few ways we could approach this. Review all of the options below and click accordingly.

    I. Check the Characters Wanted Thread
Sometimes players will put ads up for characters they'd like played. Maybe one is just what you're looking for! This is an excellent place to start, because this way you automatically have people to begin writing with right away. Often the request is something broad, maybe just a relationship, gender, and age, so there's a large amount of creative freedom.

    II. Check the Adoptables List
When characters are inactive for a really long time, they are retired or put up for adoption. Check out which of these characters are available. Keep in mind that they might have some relationships built in based on what the characters was up to when he/she was played. The good news about this option is you'll have a base to work from, and there wouldn't be a ton of work required to make the character yours.

    III. Put Family First
Let's find a House you're interested in first! But keep in mind that you can create your own if you like! Whichever path you choose, you'll need to start by visiting our House Directories for Tuneric, Balfour, and Esquibel. These pages show all the current governing Houses (the level including Royalty and just underneath) and contains a brief description of each city they rule. Every entry links to a page with more information for that House, including the history of the house, any lesser Houses that pledge fealty to that Lord, and associated family trees.
If you have any questions on a specific House, please PM the main contact for that House (listed on the bottom of the House page).

Sweet! Let's talk about your character idea.
Your muse has answered the call! That's the most important part of the puzzle! Now, do you have these pieces figured out:
    • Where is your character from?
    • Is he or she part of a noble family? Which one?
    • Is he or she a servant? Of what family?
    • Is he or she a Knight? What Order? Do they serve a certain family?

If you can cross all those questions off your list, you're on your way!

If you can't, here are resources to help you get them answered:

    • The House Directory pages for Tuneric, Balfour, and Esquibel provide a look at the cities of each country, as well as listing current and, if applicable, former ruling houses of each area. Find a place that piques your interest? The family names all link through to the House Pages, which list more in-depth information, both on the noble house itself and any lesser noble houses that serve it. Check out the house descriptions, browse the family trees, read up on potential family members. If you find a house you want to join, the person to contact with questions is listed on the House Pages, too!
    • Some families aren't associated with the major cities. Seen a family in action that you'd like to know more about? Check out the House Pages, sorted out by country: Tuneric, Balfour, and Esquibel. Smaller houses serving under a major family won't have their own page, but lesser noble families will, as well as ones that might have lost their land, for one reason or another.
    • If you are interested in a Knight, make sure you read the Chivalric Orders page if you haven't already.
      - If you would like a Knight of Dawn, Knight of Shade, Knight of the Sword, or Knight of the Shield, please contact Rick.

So you want to make a House, huh?
    Sounds good!

If you haven't visited the House Directories yet, please do so now. You can see from scrolling down the page where there are open areas that your family could be from/govern. If you want to make a lesser noble House, start by picking out a House you'd like to serve under.

So, what do we need from you?
    • We ask for a House History/Background. The application for a House is baked right into the character application (you are required to make a character for the House you are introducing).
    • We also ask for a Castle Claim (if applicable, including the real life name of the castle, and the in-game name).
Please review the Castle Claims Thread to ensure you do not pick one that is already taken.

Here are some questions you should have in mind when writing your House History/Background:
    • What is the overall feel of the House?
For example, are they really kind and loyal? Are they sketchy? Are they strict and critical? Are they boisterous?
    • How did the geographic area of the House shape business/resources, traditions, or local culture? (HINT: For write ups of what each of the regions are like, look at the descriptions for each of those regions in the homepage.)
For example, wooded areas may have a hunting culture and worship Silvica above all other gods, while coastal areas may be known for sailing and fishing and have a strong affinity for Moreesa, the goddess of the seas.
      Read more about religion here.
    • Is it an old House (were they around when the area was first settled, in the case of Tuneric did they persevere through the dark times?)? Or is it newer to the nobility?
Not sure what I mean by dark times? Click here.

Need more of a feel for what is required?
Just poke around the House Directories to check out backgrounds that have been approved. There is no word count requirement, but we would like to understand who the family is.

    You've entered the application round!
    • If you're answering a want ad, we recommend reaching out to the person who posted said ad, to let them know you're interested before you move forward with the application. It's also a great way to get any questions you have answered.
    • If you're joining an established House, we recommend introducing yourself to the House leader, and asking any questions you might have. Speaking with other active members of the house to sort out shared history/relationships will help ease your character directly into play.
    • If you're making your own House, the creation process has probably sparked your character idea. Or vice versa.

Before you start your application, be sure to consult the Face Claims Face Claims list to ensure you don't pick a PB that's in use or reserved, and while you're at it reserve yours in the Holds thread so you're sure to get who you want!

Instructions for your application can be found within the template. If you start to get stumped on parts of it, it can help to poke around the site. Not sure what to put into personal history? Look around for major events that have happened within the character's lifetime, and note how they got through them. Stumped on personality? Read through a few group threads, and think about how your character would have reacted if they were there. And don't forget the writing sample! That can really be the clearest indication of who your character is, which is why we strongly encourage you to write it in character.

Either before you've posted your application, or after it's been approved - the timing is up to your personal preference, and whether you've created an OOC account - you'll need to create your new character's account. All characters need an Avatar, which can be set in the Settings menu at the very top of the page. Avatars must be 125x125, and if you're not great with graphics and image editing, don't worry! Just let a member of staff (Rick, Kiera, or Amy) know and they'll help you out. They'll also go in and correct avatars that don't fit the size requirements after the fact, too, so if you make a mistake, don't worry! They've got you covered.

And that's it! If you have any questions:
    • Feel free to hit up the staff via PM (Rick, Kiera, or Amy).
    • You can also ask questions in the cbox.

    You're adopting a character!
We recommend reaching out to the House leader to let them know you're interested before you move forward with the application. It's also a great way to get any questions you have answered.

There are instructions in the last post of the adoptable profile about how to go through the adoption process:
    • PM the admins (Rick, Kiera, and Amy) to let them know you want to adopt the character. They will send you secrets for the character, and you have the option of keeping them or ditching them if they have not become public knowledge in-game (note: two secrets are required, one fear and one sin). They can also transfer the character username to you.
    • Then quote the original application and post it in the Character Workshop forum, with the character name as the thread title. Put in your player info (name, contact), bold any additions to the profile and write up your own sample.
    • You can change the Play-by, but we ask that you keep it close to the original. (Ex. the character couldn't now be blonde if they were a brunette).
If you'd like to make a change, please be sure to consult the Face Claims list to ensure you don't pick a PB that is in use or reserved. You could also reserve one while you work on your app.
    • Be sure to credit the original character creator in the app.

You'd feel better if you had an approved adoptable example? Click here to view one.

And that's it! If you have any questions, feel free to hit up the staff via PM (Rick, Kiera, or Amy). You can also ask questions in the cbox.

    Not sure what you want?
    That's totally okay.

Sometimes conversations are the way to find a hook or spark. To that end:
    • Feel free to hit up the staff via PM (Rick, Kiera, or Amy).
    • You can also ask questions in the cbox.
