The Cure To End Our Suffering - Afternoon - June 20 - Open

The day had been long already and Cailen was stressed beyond belief. Yes it was true he was giving good news to the people of his country but this was more than a disaster. People were falling ill all across Tuneric and some were dead due to this illness.

The moment he'd hired Evangeline Baptiste as a royal physician, at the urging of the Queen, he saw her set to work. She led the hunt for the cure and seemed much more motivated than the others. Whether it was the drive to prove herself or just to defeat this illness, Cailen didn't know, but he didn't care. He had told her to succeed and she did.

Overall the day was beautiful and the sun sat high in the sky. The air was warm and enjoyable and the King had spent the better part of the morning on his balcony. Until the cure had been found Hebron and the castle had been locked down. The royal family had been isolated in an attempt to keep them all healthy. Now the capital was flooded with people. Lords and their families and people seeking knowledge to help others.

Still taking precautionary measures they would be presenting outside and they had a large tower and short stage built to accommodate the royals and the physicians. The small stage was something around two feet off the ground where the royals would sit closer to the height of six feet. Cailen had worried about the foot traffic through the castle and the enclosed nature of the council hall. He could imagine his whole family falling ill if a gathering such as this were to take place in the castle.

Cailen stood at the railing of the tower both of his hands held firmly to the wood. Nataliah sat behind him with her hands folded neatly in her lap. Seated directly in front of him were all the Lords of Tuneric. They filled the first few rows and many of them allowed their wives to join them. The more that knew of this cure the better. Behind them was the standing masses of shop owners and tradesmen.

He took a deep breath as be looked down to see Lady Baptiste was ready to present her findings. Cailen gave her a nod and held up his hands to summon silence from the crowd.

"Ladies. Gentlemen. We have found a cure for this illness that has taken great men from our country. Dedicated women from their families. Beloved children from their futures."

There came a cheer from the back of the crowd and Cailen raised his hands once more to beg everyone to listen. He could understand their excitement but there would be time to cheer when everyone who fell ill had been restored to good health.

"We are working with House Gyrtner now to grow and harvest the materal needed for this cure. Once the plants are available we will make sure they are distributed to each city."

Evangeline had already set up what she needed on the table in the center of the stage. Other physicians were spread around in the crowd. They were each told to answer any and all questions to make sure this went as smoothly as possible.

"I now present to you Lady Baptiste, a royal physician, who will explain the cure and how it's applied."

This was the part that Evangeline had been least enthusiastic about. Damnit, she was a healer, not a public speaker. She'd tried to see if there was a way around this, but there had been no choice; she was the one who came up with the cure, and so she had to be the one to present it.

She was dressed in one of the finer outfits she brought, a cream dress with red trimmings; her house colors, although none here would know save perhaps Nataliah. Her hair was pulled back, mostly so she wouldn't fidget with it, and she had the notes she'd written clasped firmly in her hand, thoroughly wrinkled by now from all of her fretting. She listened to the King speak, and her heart flew when she heard him say her name. 'Royal physician'. Her parents would be proud...if they were still alive when she got home.

Stepping to the front of the podium, Evangeline cleared her throat and stood tall, projecting her voice over the crowd. "Men and women of the court; Ladies and gentlemen. What the King tells you is true: we have discovered a treatment that works on this plague that has been raging through the population. As it turns out, the plant which held the key has been in plain sight all along." She held aloft a cutting of one of the plants, its simple white flowers doubtlessly familiar to everyone assembled.

She had tortured herself over what she was going to say from the moment King Cailen had told her she would be presenting her findings to the public. There was a balance to be struck between being informative and overwhelming, and that balance must be found in a language and terminology that could be understood by all. The notes she had were rewritten countless times, and if she'd had more time she would doubtless be rewriting them again.

"The key, as it turns out, is in the plant's roots. It takes a fully grown plant, bearing flowers, to provide what is required. The roots must be harvested and cleaned, and then ground into a pulp while they are still fresh. This paste is then further processed, at which point it must be pressed through a cloth to extract every drop of moisture. It is that extract, that essence which holds the most curative properties. It can be stored in a corked bottle for a small amount of time, but is best used as fresh as possible; if it must be stored, it must be in a glass bottle wrapped in cloth and corked tightly, so air and light exposure are kept at a minimum."

Reaching to the table beside her, she lifted a bottle that was prepared in such a way, corked tightly and wrapped in dark cotton scraps. "The cure is best administered in a hot liquid; hot water is ideal, although since the flavor is less than pleasant, it may be added to a strong tea. If the patient is unable to drink on his or her own, the extract may be administered undiluted by carefully applying a few drops at a time to the patient's tongue, allowing them to swallow between each application. One teaspoon is adequate for most cases, although up to three may be used if the infection is severe. Please be warned, though, to not give more than that, especially to small children; the effects of an overdose is something that has not yet been studied."

Stopping there, she looked up at the King, and then back out over the crowd. "The Gyrtner family had been instrumental in working to get enough of this for everyone, although it is likely that the demand shall exceed the supply. There are those among you who have been trained in the production of this cure, and they will be sent out over the land to spread this knowledge. In addition to that, I will be explaining the process here after everything is adjourned, for any who wish to learn, and I will do my best to answer any questions which may arise."

That was another thing she wasn't quite looking forward to, although she was prepared for it. On the table beside her she had all the tools she'd need, and she'd even taken the time to write out instructions for both identifying the proper plant and working up the extract itself, and with the help of some of the scholars she had a good number of sheets she could hand out.

"If there are any questions now I invite any to speak. Otherwise, I shall turn the attention back over to His Majesty."

They were supposed to believe this rubbish? That the royals would save us with their cure? They probably made this disease that plagued the streets! This garbage about a small weed that they plucked from the ditches, saving us all, and they just hoped the peasants believed it. They were probably hoarding the real cure for themselves!

She was held behind the line of knights, a dark brown shawl wrapped around her shoulders but her deep gray dress shown from below, she wasn't of money so she wasn't allowed to hear the comments. That was fine, she was loud, they'd still hear her.

"How can we trust that this little weed will save us!?" She shouted from behind one of the Knights of Dawn. "How do we know this isn't a waste of time?"

Others in the crowd started to shift and cheer as they stood around and behind her. Sure the Lords that gain the King's favor wouldn't ask but those with calloused hands and dirt on their faces had nothing to lose. If they were hung for asking questions it wouldn't matter in the least since they were all to die anyways.

Men and women started to cheer, started to demand proof, and Cidney smiled to herself as she backed away from the Knights in front of her when they demanded she do so.

No matter how she tried, Nolana still could not block the butterflies from her stomach. Everything had happened so quickly and with such an air of urgency that she could barely process the past few days. There was nothing to be anxious about, she knew. Everywhere her eye traveled, Dawn knights stood guard, watching over the growing crowd of nobles and commoners. The Gyrtner couldn’t help but notice that they looked on edge though, as if they knew something would happen. But why would it? This was good, this gathering was the announcement of the cure, there was no ill harbored by the coming words.

Still, they had her nervous and she kept glancing at their numerous faces, visible behind raised visors. Ever so often she would glance behind her, a row back and to her right where Lord Metcalfe sat with Sir Kelley. He would meet her gaze with a comforting smile and she instantly felt better each time. Their King spoke first and introduced Evangeline, who began to break down the cure they had found and how to apply it. Nolana zoned out a few times, her green eyes taking in the crowd, the faces of the Lords and Ladies situated around her. She scanned the expressions of the commoners – some were hopeful, some murmured to their neighbors, and others simply looked… dull. Disinterested. Perhaps angry. Again, why should they be? Her fingers smoothed the purple and green fabric of her dress, one of the finer ones she owned, in apprehension.

The mention of her house caused Nolana to focus forward again, but she did not smile at the credit that was given. Instead, she reached over and squeezed her sister’s hand warmly. The healer called for questions and Nolana allowed another look at the crowd. All seemed well, the reception was not exactly what she expected, not a jubilant or praise ridden. Instead, a female voice called out, "How can we trust that this little weed will save us!? How do we know this isn't a waste of time?"

Nolana joined the chorus of turning heads to where the voice had originated from, but the guards had pushed back the restless soul. They could not keep the others subdued though and other commoners joined in the chant for proof.

”They do not understand,” Nolana whispered quietly, her brows furrowed in frustration and confusion. ”They simply must trust us… we are all in the same boat are we not? This disease has affected us all…” With a shake of her head, Nolana returned her gaze to Evangeline wondering how the woman would respond. It would be considered rude and improper for Nolana to stand and address the crowd herself, no matter how much she wanted to so all she could do was wait and hope for the best.

A/N: I have permission from Kiera to have Cailen do a couple things, just pointing that out.

As Lady Liliana Gyrtner made her way through the hallway leading towards the meeting chambers of the King himself, she couldn’t help, but be nervous. She had watched the Lady Baptiste and her sister go off towards the meeting and she had been invited by Evangeline, yet Lily found they were more than capable of handling them themselves. However she wanted to be there for moral support. Both women were strong enough, but a room full of men and nobles wasn’t going to be easy on them.

She rounded the corner before the chamber doors and was stopped by a man whom Lily recognized as the new Lord of Aston, Lord Adam Sheridan and a blonde woman on his arm.

“Excuse me I apologize, I just must hurry to the meeting.” Lily said not wanting to be rude, but the woman smiled at her.

“You are the youngest Gyrtner sister are you not? Lady Liliana?”

“Yes…I am afraid I do not know your name my lady.”

“No need to be formal Lady Liliana, I’m Lady Aislynn Fairfax, Lord Sheridan’s older and wiser sister. It is an honor to meet you and your sister. We thank you for taking on this heavy task even if everyone else won’t show their appreciation.” Aislynn smiled at Lily and Lily smiled back brightly.

“Yes if your sister or you need anything, you let me know.” Adam replied giving her a smile as well.

“I thank you both for your kind words; I believe we shall need luck more than anything right now. I hope others will have more faith in us like you both do.” Lily commented with a smile as Adam escorted both women into the meeting chambers. Adam and Aislynn took their seats while Lily made her way to the front finding Lady Baptiste and Nolana quickly in front of everyone in their seats. On the way, she gave people smiles and sat down as the King himself stood up and began speaking. Then Lily watched with interested and confident eyes as Evangeline began to spoke. She spoke the truth and her speech was flawless. Everything was going well however the reactions were surprising. The entire chamber was silent before a female voice called out from the back demanding proof on why this plant would work. Lily watched as she met Lexington’s unexpected gaze and she stared at him nervously before trying to find the source of the voice.

As the voices rang around them, before she knew what she was doing, Lily stood up confidently and went over to the King ignoring Nolana’s voice telling her to sit down.

“Your Majesty, may I have your permission to speak?” She asked curiously and he nodded before silencing the crowd and letting her have the floor. Oh god now what? She thought to herself as she stood forward.

“My Lords and Ladies, I know it is hard to believe that a tiny plant has the ability to cure a dangerous and fast disease, but after weeks of research, this is the only solution we feel is necessary! My family has been studying plants for almost a century and many of you have trusted us to rebuild your gardens and lands throughout the years. The Lady Baptiste is more than qualified in her profession and my sister and I are honored to have her beside us working on a cure on something that has affected us all. Whether you have a family member or simply a neighbor dying from this disease, until this cure has been made, every person is this room is at risk! We ask you for your understanding and your faith in us. The more time we spend in here talking, the more people we know and love are at risk or even dying from this. Please I ask all of you to think of someone you love dying before a cure is found, my own brother has recently passed on from this world sickened by this plague. We have found a cure and now I ask all of you, do you trust us to save your family, loved ones and your people?” Lily asked curiously as she stared hard at every single person catching Adam and Aislynn’s smiles of support before sitting back down next to Nolana.

She stood, surrounded by commoners, farmers and merchants. She'd backed away from the knights who were still glaring at her but it didn't stop her from hearing the Lady's words as she shouted over the crowds.

These people were sheep. They believe whatever they're told and never question a thing. What happened? When did they all become some hive like society. All they cared about was getting their money. By this time she was sure the Lords had put a price on the cure, one the common people would have to sell furniture and foods to afford.

Cidney shook her head but the crowd around her still roared. "We have found a cure and now I ask all of you, do you trust us to save your family, loved ones and your people?” Believe what you wish people. But just think, who takes your lands when your whole family is dead? Who profits from this plague.
